AirPods on vertical charger
If you have a wireless charging mat that is horizontal, you can often charge the AirPods case without difficulty. However, there is a problem with vertical wireless chargers. They are designed for smartphones and therefore the charging point is quite high. Due to the small size of the AirPods case, the coils don’t get close enough together. Yet with a clever trick you can still use such a vertical wireless charger. We tested it on a number of models and it turned out to work!
This trick often works!
There is a trick to still charge your wireless AirPods case with a vertical wireless charger. To make sure the coils in the case and the wireless charger touch each other, place the AirPods case upside down or on its side. There is a chance that the two coils will just touch each other, which will start charging. Below we show how this works.
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that every model of wireless charger will work. It may be that you just have a certain model that has the coil a bit higher. In that case, you could place a matchbox or other small object under the AirPods as an elevation.
No problem with MagSafe chargers and newer AirPods
Vertical MagSafe chargers are also available, where you attach your iPhone magnetically to the charger. Because of the magnets, there is no support at the bottom where your iPhone rests. The trick from this article will not work in combination with AirPods. But if you have the AirPods 3 (2021) or the improved AirPods Pro with MagSafe charging case, no trick is necessary either. The AirPods case of these models also has magnets, so you can simply stick it to the charger.
Popular vertical chargers
Popular vertical chargers include the Belkin Boost, Mophie Charge Stream, and Zens Ultra Fast. You’ll find them in our roundup of wireless chargers. Sometimes they offer the option of folding down the plate where the smartphone leans against, so that you still get a flat charging plate, but that is not the case with all models.
