To this day, thousands of Spaniards are celebrating that they have not had a polling station. But are you sure that you are “safe” and that you will not have to end up spending the day in one of the centers where other citizens go to vote?
Have you not received notification for the polling station? We would like to congratulate you. But we are not going to do it, at least not for now. Because even if you think that you are now free to end up at a polling station with other citizens, the reality is very different. As we are going to explain to you in the following lines: even on the day of the elections they could call you.

Due to the circumstances in which the elections are held this year, the margin for claiming that one cannot form part of a polling station is more generous than usual. Not only in time, but also in terms of the number of reasons that allow you to “get rid” of this function. Because of this, there are chances that they end up calling you to cover an absence at one of the polling stations. It’s not necessarily going to happen, but the possibility exists.
The problem with these elections is that the search for members of the polling stations is being done in extremis and it is known that many people are doing everything possible not to participate. Every time someone receives carte blanche, the wheel turns again in search of another citizen who can face the responsibility. Hence, the process can be extended until the last day as we now explain in greater detail.
After the search for members and presidents
For the municipalities, the ideal would have been that, in the first draw that was carried out, which took place between June 22 and 28, all the people who would be part of each polling station would have already been confirmed. On July 1, the first period of notifications corresponding to that first draw ended. But what happens if someone claimed that he had a contracted trip before the elections were called or that he was on vacation? These people had until July 8 to demonstrate that their reason was among those accepted for not attending the polling station.
The allegations that were sent until July 8 fell into the hands of the Electoral Board the following days and they had until July 13 to determine if they were valid or not. All those that were valid implied places that, now, 10 days before the elections, had to be filled. From there, the Electoral Board had a job again, since, between July 14 and 20, they are in the process of contacting the substitutes. And this is bad news for you, because that means that you have to keep an eye on the phone, because they still have hours to contact you and give you the news.
But what happens if one of the surrogates also proves that they cannot accept the responsibility entrusted to them? This could occur up to a period of 3 days before the appointment. It is a viable situation and that would leave the polling station unable to be constituted, which would imply that, be very careful if you are going to vote early, because the first voter can be claimed by the president to join the polling station as an emergency situation. And if you have something to do, a commitment or you were on your way to bring your children some churros? You’ll have to discuss that with the president.
So no, until the last moment, when you have already voted and you see the people who are part of the polling station, among whom it is very possible that you recognize more than one neighbor, you should not rule it out. And if it is your turn, think that it is an experience, that there is a lot of talk about football, about life, that it is good to reconnect with the people of the neighborhood and that, in addition, in the end you have a small reward: 70 euritos in your pocket to that you spend them as you want.
