In today’s world, identity theft scams are, unfortunately, the order of the day. If you are a Digi customer, the operator wanted to review the most common scams that you can fall into using the company as bait.

We review these most frequent scams with Digi as the protagonist and what to do to avoid falling for them. Remember that, if you have any suspicious message, you can call 1200, free from the Digi network, or 642642642 from another operator to take the initiative and make sure if you are facing a scam case or not.

Website impersonation

This scam is a classic in bank identity theft, but it can also happen with telephone operators. The mechanics are classic phishing: you receive an email or SMS in which they request personal information to carry out a transaction, in this case with Digi. To do this, they ask you to access a website through a link or a button.

It copies Digi’s aesthetics and in this way the victim reduces their defensive attitude and trusts said website. You can then enter your login details, bank details, etc. Beyond the appearance, which is sometimes really elaborate and difficult to distinguish from the real website, look at other warning signs.

One of them is spelling. Corporate pages do not usually have spelling and grammar errors. If you see something suspicious, run away. The second thing is to look at the URL. Anything other than digimobil.es is more likely to be a scam. Also, although it is not foolproof, check if it has the lock icon in the address bar. This symbol indicates that the connection between the browser and the website is secure (https) and cannot be manipulated by third parties.

SIM Digi Card Swapping

Digi is one of the operators that has suffered the most punishment from the Spanish Data Protection Agency regarding the so-called SIM Swapping: up to 10 times. The Romanian operator has appealed these ten sanctions, but the agency has rejected all of them, so it has had to pay a total of 700,000 euros in fines.

Digi SIM

The mechanics of this scam are as follows. Someone manages to impersonate your identity and request a duplicate of your SIM card from Digi. In this way, you can then authorize another series of fraudulent actions through the confirmation and authentication messages that arrive by SMS, such as sending money from your bank account, requesting a loan or making an online purchase.

Digi, as a result of so many fines, has reinforced its SIM card duplication system. Now, if a duplicate SIM is requested, an SMS is automatically sent to the phone number of the line owner to check if they have requested it. If this is not the case, you can cancel it immediately by calling 1200 toll-free.

In addition, all SIM duplicates are carried out in person at Digi points of sale. The owner of the line must be physically present and all documentation that identifies him or her as such must be original and current.
