O2 is Telefónica’s second brand in Spain and, therefore, uses Movistar’s coverage throughout the national territory to offer its convergent fiber and mobile rates, mobile only or fiber. It is a great alternative within the sector of low-cost operators, as its prices are quite competitive and it is a cheaper way to have the quality of Movistar without its prices, which is why O2 is one of the operators best valued by consumers. .
O2 was presented in Spain at the end of 2018 as Telefónica’s option to compete in the low-cost operator market. O2’s rate proposal competes directly with those of Digi or Lowi and these are some of the aspects that we have to take into account before hiring any of O2’s services. With the beginning of 2024 it is time to put in order everything it offers us and we should know before launching into hiring it.
5G coverage at O2
One of the main disadvantages that O2 had with respect to Movistar was that it could not access its 5G coverage network despite using its infrastructure. After several years of demanding it, O2 customers finally have the fifth generation of mobile networks at their disposal from November 2022.
Of course, it is essential to have an O2 rate that includes 5G. Right now, the operator already ensures that all additional mobile lines associated with a fiber + mobile rate have 5G. However, if you have a mobile-only tariff, all of them will have this fifth generation connection.
Permanence
If you are thinking of contracting with O2, you are in luck, because it is one of those operators that lack permanence, which always gives you enough freedom to go to another operator if they offer you more advantageous conditions or you are not satisfied with the service.
This commitment to not have permanence is confirmed again and is also reflected in the communications about the service changes after applying the new Telecommunications Law: “it will not imply changes in the conditions of permanence (there has never been permanence or penalties in O2 and that It’s going to stay the same).
The absence of permanence is one of the company’s values, to such an extent that they state that they will not at any time try to retain their clients by offering any type of discount if they decide to leave, which would facilitate portability.
Unlimited calls
In the case of convergent fiber and mobile rates, both landline and mobile include unlimited calls to national landlines and mobiles. Also the mobile-only rates, the additional mobile lines and the fiber-only rate have unlimited calls so with O2 we will not have to worry about the number of calls or minutes we talk in any of the cases.
These unlimited calls already included in the price include both calls to landlines and national mobile phones. Obviously, special rate and international calls outside of European roaming would be excluded from the price.
Unlimited data
At this point, Telefónica’s second brand still does not have the option of having a mobile rate with unlimited data. For mobile-only rates, the maximum is 150 GB for browsing. If we use up the megabytes of our rate, we will continue browsing at no extra cost at 128 kbps if you use up the data on your rate or, if you prefer, you can buy an extra data bonus.
On the other hand, if we contract a convergent fiber and mobile rate, the maximum number of gigabytes for browsing that we can have is 200 GB for the 1 Gbps fiber speed rate (for a price of 50 euros per month). The other connection speed offered, 500 Mbps, has 100 GB and 50 GB of data, respectively (with prices of 42 and 38 euros/month).
Movistar, in addition to having rates with unlimited data, has made all its rates with a certain number of gigabytes at 5G speed then in practice infinite, since the subsequent speed is 2 Mbps, enough to browse the Internet, use networks social media, watch or listen via streaming or make or receive video calls. It is to be hoped that in the future this improvement will also reach O2.
Additional mobile lines
Regarding the contracting of additional lines, we have two options depending on the convergent fiber and mobile rate that we have contracted. Additional lines associated with a fiber can share the free data sharing service through the O2 app. If we activate it, all lines will automatically begin to share data between them.
- Additional 100 GB mobile line: With 5G, unlimited calls to national landlines and mobiles with 100 GB to browse for 15 euros per month for each additional line up to a maximum of four.
- Additional 40 GB mobile line: With 5G, unlimited calls to national landlines and mobiles with 40 GB to browse for 10 euros per month for each additional line up to a maximum of four.
- Additional 10 GB mobile line: With 5G, unlimited calls to national landlines and mobiles with 10 GB to browse for 5 euros per month for each additional line up to a maximum of four.
Fiber speeds in O2
If we are looking at O2 for the possibility of contracting 1 Gbps fiber, we are in luck with O2. This option is available whether we contract a convergent rate with a mobile phone or opt for the fiber-only option.
The other fiber speeds contractable with O2 is 500 Mbps if we are interested in contracting a fiber and mobile rate. In this case in two different convergent variants: with a 100 GB 5G mobile line at maximum speed for 42 euros per month or together with a 50 GB 5G mobile line for 38 euros per month.
The lowest speed they have is 300 Mbps, which you can get, for example, in the fiber-only rate that has a price of 27 euros per month
Billing
Each operator establishes a billing cycle, so if we contract any of the O2 rates, it is important that we know what the billing cycle of this operator is. In this case it begins on the 18th of each month and ends on the 17th of the following month and it is not possible to modify these dates while always being the same.
On the other hand, the invoice is issued on the 1st of each month. If it coincides with a holiday, the payment will be made on the closest day. In addition, at any time we can view and download invoices through the O2 application.
O2 already has television
One of the shortcomings of O2 is that it did not have the possibility of having television. It is true that this is something inherent to low-cost operators, but Telefónica’s second brand is something different. For a few months now, with O2 you can enjoy the renewed Movistar Plus+ for 12 euros per month (thanks to the 2-euro discount coupon for being a customer).
In the new Movistar Plus+ we can see the M+ match from LA LIGA EA SPORTS and the best Champions League match every day, matches from the Endesa League, Euroleague and NBA. In addition, rugby, golf, NFL and paddle tennis, a movie premiere a day and a large catalog with movies, all the original Movistar Plus+ series and a selection of the best international premiere series and programs such as La Resistencia, Ilustres ignorantes , documentaries, music festivals and more than 70 channels.
Free cloud space
One of the advantages of O2 over the rest of the companies, except Movistar and Digi, is that it offers free cloud space thanks to its O2Cloud service. This service is available for customers with Fiber and Mobile rates.
In total, you will have 500GB in the cloud to store your photos, videos or documents safely. The service can be accessed through the computer or by using the mobile application enabled for this purpose.
Easier from Movistar
One of the advantages of O2 is that, if we come from Movistar, it is not necessary to change the SIM card nor for the technician to visit us to change the router. As they are Telefónica brands, “everything stays at home” and will be much more comfortable for the user.
As the operator explains on its website, we do not have to do anything with the fiber installation and the change will be made automatically within a maximum period of 3 business days. On the mobile we will not have to do anything at all. Of course, if we have any type of permanence, we will have to pay the corresponding penalty.
