Electronics Arts (EA) has announced that they are collaborating with Amazon MGM Studios to create a film adaptation of The Sims. While not much is known about the plot yet, we do know that they intend to match the success of the Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The Sims series of social simulation video games has been with us since the beginning of the millennium, in the year 2000. We have spent hours creating characters and playing God, managing their lives as we please. Although the most fanatic ones know the lives of the Tombstone family, the Hot family or the Gentle family, it is time for them to reach the big screen.
With the movie that Amazon is developing, we will probably get a closer look at the lives of all the characters that come included with the game. We won’t have to imagine what The Sims mean in their Simish language, but the feature film will translate it for us.
Who is behind The Sims movie?
Little is known about the plot of The Sims movie, but Amazon MGM Studios has selected Kate Herron to direct the film. Herron has already directed other acclaimed audiovisual works, such as the series Loki and Sex Education.
Herron will also be involved in the script work and also has experience in this field, having written Doctor Who: Fifteenth Doctor. The other scriptwriter will be Briony Redman, with whom the film’s director has already collaborated on the aforementioned series.
In addition, video game developer and distributor EA has highlighted that one of the production companies is LuckyChap, which has Margot Robbie as co-founder. This actress was the star of Barbie (2023), which was a huge box office success, becoming the 14th most-watched feature film in cinemas of all time.
What else is known about The Sims movie?
EA wants to emulate the formula of Mattel’s Barbie movie. In fact, Kate Gorman, the company’s vice president and general manager of The Sims, said that its goal is to “make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie.”
As with Barbie, EA and Amazon will create a film aimed at fans of the video game. The Sims developer has explained that it wants to awaken the “love and nostalgia” of the most veteran players of the series. Therefore, it is expected that we will see the most classic stories of the game in the feature film.
The film aims to be so true to the game’s reality that Gorman said in an interview with Variety that she was sure they would include “a pool without a ladder.” However, she confessed that they haven’t finalized any of the details and the plot is still up in the air. The only thing Gorman is sure of is that it will be “a nod to all the incredible play, creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years in The Sims.”
The news of the movie comes alongside bad news for The Sims 5
While a Sims movie is something that fans of the game are excited about, EA has also revealed that they have no plans to release The Sims 5. Instead of releasing a new installment, the company has chosen to improve The Sims 4 with a new update and more extensions.
Electronics Arts is working on a creator program, so that players who want to create custom items in the game can sell them. They are also considering expanding the franchise with a cross-platform multiplayer experience.
It’s clear that the brand doesn’t want to abandon its flagship game, with its updates in The Sims 4 and the movie that is on the way. However, there is still a lot to be learned about what The Sims will bring in the fifth installment.
