Due to the enormous controversy generated by the changes in X, many users are migrating to other alternatives such as Bluesky. But it is also true that they will have to get used to the way this other social platform works.
The truth is that despite its short life, Bluesky is experiencing quite significant growth over the last few months. Little by little, users are getting used to the operation of this other alternative platform to the old Twitter, but their reviews are quite positive.
It is also true that certain basic functions are missing for some, such as the possibility of having a private account. And by default our account is publicly accessible by anyone on Bluesky. One of the main attractions of this proposal is that it is safer and less toxic than X. But those called trolls are already beginning to spread, who create their own accounts and from whom we want to protect ourselves.
Rules to follow in Bluesky to maintain order
Fortunately, there are some protective measures to keep harassment at bay on Bluesky. In addition, its top managers are committed to keeping the platform civil and friendly using a series of community guidelines. There are rules against harassment, abusive behavior, hate speech, impersonation, and other similar topics.
Likewise, the social network has rules against ban evasion and hopes to improve this functionality. We are talking about evading bans by creating new accounts or reusing existing ones to replace a banned account. At the same time, efforts are being made to make the process of creating a new account more complex to avoid unwanted users or users considered toxic.
The platform has launched several toxicity detection experiments where it tries to detect rude responses and automatically send them to moderators. In fact, in the moderation settings there are many options to remove rude and threatening posts from our feed. Thus, although we cannot create private accounts, we can largely protect ourselves from unwanted users from the menu option called Moderation.
In this way, if we want to keep the feed as civil as possible, we can always activate the option to warn or hide posts classified as rude or threatening.
Other measures to make Bluesky safer
Apart from the guidelines established by the platform and that we have mentioned before, we can take other measures ourselves to protect ourselves. For example, we have the option of not linking our real name to the account we create. Likewise, we should avoid publishing photos with our face, or revealing personal data such as occupation, location or anything else.
We can also make use of Bluesky’s custom feeds feature. This allows us to avoid engaging with unwanted bad users or seeing their posts in our feed.
Likewise, we must keep in mind that we can create our own labels so that community moderators can manage the visibility of certain content. Users can subscribe to specific moderation services that do this work for us to hide or warn about specific unwanted content.
