Do your devices connect to the wrong network and don’t know how to solve it? If you ever happened to you that you get home, you want to connect to the wifi and your device insists on choosing the worst possible network, do not worry, you are not alone. In this article, I will teach you how to take control of your Wi -Fi connections, prioritizing the best networks so you never have to deal with a slow or unstable connection. These useful tricks will make your life much easier.

The most common in our home is to have a single Wi-Fi wireless network, however, it is advisable to have several. In redeszone we have always recommended “separating” the frequency bands in several different SSID, so that you know at all times to which frequency band you are connected. In addition, you could also configure some network for guests, and even for IoT. For this reason, it is very important to properly configure Wi -Fi customers to connect with priority to the one you want.

Why do your devices choose the incorrect network and how to change it?

Surely it has happened to you: you get home and your mobile or portable connects to the guest network or the Wi -Fi extensor, leaving aside the strongest and most stable signal. This occurs because the devices, by default, choose the closest network or that to which they connected before. Although this is not always a problem, it can generate discomfort if you end with a slow or unstable connection. Fortunately, there are ways to change the priority of Wi -Fi networks and make sure that your devices always choose the best option.

The process to modify the network priority varies according to the device or operating system you use. Here I explain it step by step.

In Windows: Change priorities from the system

  • From the system symbol:
    • Open the start menu, seek system symbol and execute it.
    • Write: Netsh Wlan Show Profiles to see the saved networks.
    • To adjust the priority, use this command:

netsh wlan set profileorder name="NombreDeRed" interface="Wi-Fi" priority=1

Change Dedred name for the network you want to prioritize and adjust the priority number.

  • From the advanced configuration:
    • Go to Configuration> Network and Internet> Advanced network configuration.
    • Access the properties of the adapter and adjust the metric manually to give priority to a network.

In macOS: adjust from network preferences

If you use prior to Ventura:

  1. Go to system preferences> Network.
  2. In the list of known networks, drag your preferred network to the top.
  3. Mark the box to join automatically in the networks you use the most.

In Ventura or posterior macOS:

  1. Go to system configuration> wifi.
  2. Select the three -point menu next to a network and choose “automatically connect.”
  3. If you need to forget it, use the delete option from the list.

Change Wi-Fi priority

On iPhone and Android: deactivates the automatic connection

  • In Android:
    • Enter the Wi -Fi settings, select the network and deactivate the automatic connection option.
    • If you prefer to delete the network completely, select Forget Red.
  • On iPhone:
    • Go to adjustments> wifi.
    • Press the “I” icon next to the network and deactivate automatic connection.

Improve your connection with QOs and mesh systems

In addition to prioritizing networks, you can optimize your experience with advanced tools:

  • QUALITY OF SERVICE (QOs): If your router allows it, configure this option to prioritize activities such as online games or video calls. This will ensure that important traffic has preference.
  • Wi-Fi systems in mesh: If you have problems with network extensors, mesh systems can be the definitive solution. These create a single uniform network and automatically manage the connection to the nearest node.

You do not have to settle for an unstable connection or see how your devices choose the incorrect network. With a few adjustments, you can make sure they always connect to the most optimal network. If you seek to further improve your experience, consider options such as QOs or mesh systems for a fluid connection throughout your house.
