Phishing campaigns are back on track after a new episode of scam has been detected that threatens our security. This time, hackers have impersonated a home courier service that acts through massive fraudulent emails and a series of guidelines must be followed to avoid falling into temptation and becoming victims of scams. To do this, Incibe has put into circulation the solution that you have to implement immediately if you receive this type of messages. If you want to know which company these criminals have impersonated, keep reading this article.
Virtually any user with a mobile phone or email account has experienced a situation of attempted deception. The Internet is the perfect way for cybercriminals to carry out their illicit techniques with the aim of taking all the money they can from their victims. Normally, they tend to choose the most appropriate means to do so, such as WhatsApp, SMS or email, and sometimes they tend to emerge victorious.
Likewise, the Internet User Security Office (OSI) is dedicated to detecting this type of shady altercations thanks, in large part, to the reports made by users who experience it. For this reason, the security agency always invites you to report this bad practice in order to put an end to the misdeeds of cyber robbers. This time, a cell of cybercriminals has been located posing as the FedEx parcel service, which has international coverage, although it is a company of American origin.
FedEx impersonation
It has already been revealed that FedEx has been the perfect excuse to maneuver tricks on different users. The OSI indicates that the procedure is being carried out through a fraudulent email that tries to deceive the victim using as proof an order that they have unclaimed and must click on a link to be able to purchase it. This link redirects to a website that pretends to be the company in question and asks you to make a customs payment to receive that supposed package, accompanied by all your banking and personal information.
If you have ignored it, you must immediately delete that email and mark it as spam. Otherwise, if you have decided to continue and accept all the conditions included in the email, you must follow the following recommendations:
- Contact your bank directly to report the case.
- Take screenshots of the entire process to have all the evidence to hand over to the police.
- Over the next few months, check internet search engines to check that they have not impersonated your identity without your consent, so that, if so, you can request that they be removed by exercising the right to be forgotten.
- In the event that you are really waiting for a FedEx order, it is advisable to check the order number in the official website from the parcel company.
- Verify that the email comes from an official source and domain.
How do cybercriminals act?
Hackers send an email with false information with the concept that it has been impossible to deliver the merchandise to the home, with the following subjects:
- “You still have (1) unclaimed order.”
- “Hello, This is an update about your undelivered package.”
Keep in mind that these emails are sent with fictitious email accounts that use the aliases “Customer Service” and “Account Verification.” In this case, images, formats and corporate email addresses are not used, so it is confirmed that they are completely false.
