The Windows “explorer.exe” process is one of the most important processes that we can find in the system, but, at the same time, it is one of the ones that causes the most problems and most often fails. And, although Microsoft is perfectly aware of this, and tries to solve it in many ways, sooner or later this process usually fails and causes us problems. But, recently, problems related to this process were much more frequent than usual, why?

Explorer can crash at any time. It doesn’t matter if we’re using the file explorer, the browser, a game, or just have the desktop open. When it crashes, we can see how the desktop freezes for a few seconds, then everything closes (even the background disappears) and then starts up again. At first, the crash only interrupts us for a couple of seconds, but during the restart process all the windows of the file explorer close and, in addition, icons disappear from the system tray (where the clock is) until we restart the PC.

If you have recently been encountering more than your usual share of this type of problem, you are in luck today.

Multiple fixes in Explorer.exe

Thanks to the Feedback Hub, Microsoft has been able to identify a fairly serious error in the Windows 11 explorer process that was causing many more crashes and restarts than usual.

Windows 11 Opinions Center - Explorer Error

As we can see published in this section, Microsoft has noticed this error because many users were reporting it. And, thus, they have been able to release a patch that fixes the problem to prevent it from continuing to bother users.

This fix is now available to all users in build 22635.4005 of the operating system, which is installed with Windows 11 patch KB5041587. The engineer who reported the solution to this problem indicates that, if we notice that explorer.exe continues to fail or give problems, we should not hesitate to contact them directly through this Windows feedback center so that they can solve the problems as soon as possible.

More fixes in new updates

In addition to the fixes and improvements to Windows File Explorer itself, Microsoft has introduced other changes and improvements within the OS itself. For example, some of the most important ones are:

  • Fixed an issue where the Control + F keyboard shortcut would not work correctly.
  • Several accessibility-related improvements are included within the file explorer itself.
  • Fixed an issue that caused keyboard focus to be lost when using the Shift + Tab keyboard shortcut.
  • Various fixes related to screen readers, which cause issues when reading menus or using some view settings.

Microsoft has also taken advantage of these updates to include some other changes, such as, for example, greater ease when sharing files directly with the mobile phone thanks to Neaby Share, and greater security in the Windows 11 widget panel.

If you haven’t received these changes on your system yet (since they are optional), you should receive them tomorrow, no matter what, since that’s when the new security patches for Windows arrive, along with all these fixes.
