When we connect to the Internet, all our data and personal information is exposed. There are many points where hackers can access our data, get hold of it, and also monitor everything we do on the Internet. And not only hackers, but large Internet companies also get hold of our information in order to know our interests and show ads related to them. To avoid this, and to be safer and more anonymous on the Internet, what we know as a VPN comes into play.

A VPN is a secure and direct connection from our computer to an external server, so that all traffic travels encrypted from end to end without anything or anyone being able to analyze or alter it. When we visit a website, for example, the data we have to send is sent directly to the VPN server, and once there, all our personal information (IP, origin, etc.) is removed from it and then sent to the destination. The responses are the same, since they are sent to the server, packaged, and sent to our PC.

vpn works

There are two main types of VPNs. On the one hand, we have free VPNs, which allow us to connect to the Internet through these servers without having to pay. The problem is that those responsible for them have to make money somehow, and they often do so by selling user data or injecting ads into the browser. On the other hand, we have paid VPNs, controlled by serious and professional companies, which do provide us with the security and privacy we are looking for.

Today, we bring you a new “free” VPN thanks to which you can browse safely from your mobile or from any PC. And, what’s more, with Microsoft’s guarantee.

This is the Microsoft 365 VPN

Microsoft has started to activate its VPN in some countries, a new advantage that it will offer to Microsoft 365 users. This new VPN comes with 50 GB of free traffic that will be renewed month by month. This is a new improvement for its subscription package with which it seeks to give users the extra security and privacy they need.

Microsoft Defender App

50 GB may seem like a small amount of space for a whole month these days. However, Microsoft has made it clear that the purpose of this VPN is not streaming. What’s more, if it detects that it is being used on platforms such as Netflix, TikTok, YouTube or Spotify, for example, it will automatically deactivate itself so as not to waste traffic. And we will not be able to choose the country through which we want to access the Internet. The purpose of this secure connection is to allow users to encrypt all network traffic and hide the user’s IP address.

This new VPN will be available to all users within the Microsoft Defender app, in a new section called “Privacy Protection.”

Not in Spain at the moment

The bad news is that, for now, this new free VPN is not available in Spain. Microsoft has only enabled it in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada to test its correct operation before its mass launch. Therefore, unless we are in one of those countries, we will still have to wait to be able to use this new feature.

Since it is already in operation within the European Economic Area (in Germany), it is certain that it will reach Spain and the rest of the countries of the European Union. What we do not know is when it will do so. For now, what we can do is install the Microsoft security center that we have told you about and protect our computers and phones.
