When it comes to managing our home router, it usually happens that we have to find the access credentials to its management portal, in order to reconfigure or adjust something. These keys usually appear on the sticker that the routers include, with these keys next to the WiFi password. However, there are other types of credentials that we are not so used to using because we do not usually need them. However, it is the information that we will have to know if we want to use a router other than the one that the operator gives us when we contract Internet with it.
We are talking about PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) credentials. They consist of a username and password that is used to be able to use a neutral router or a router that we buy on our own and that is not the official one that the operator gives us.
Maybe we want to use our own router because it has more advanced features than the operator’s, or we want to use a complementary router to the operator’s. It is in these situations that we will have to enter these keys on the configuration page of this secondary router to be able to connect to the Internet.
If you need the PPPoE keys and you are a Digi customer, you may be wondering where you can get this information, since it will not be detailed on the router sticker. A user has asked the company about this on Twitter, and the Romanian operator has explained that the way to get them is to contact the company directly.
To make it more agile, you can send a private message to Digi on Twitter expressing that you need your PPPoE keys, and adding the owner’s data so they can locate your line.
Searching for PPPoE keys through an Internet search is not a good idea, since these can be different for each individual Digi customer, and only the operator knows what yours are.
Alternative method
If you find yourself in the hypothetical case in which Digi does not give you these keys, or you want to get them without having to contact the operator, there is another manual method that can work for you.
- Enter the configuration menu of your router (open a web browser on your PC and enter the address 192.168.1.1).
- Enter ‘Internet’.
- Enter ‘IPv6 Setting’.
- In the PPPoE section, you will see your username.
- The password is below, but in hidden characters. To unlock it, press the keys at the same time
CTRL+Shift+C
to open the Browser Inspector. - Click on the box with the password to access the HTML code.
- In the inspector, we go to “value”, and we can see our password in quotes.
Ready, you now have your PPPoE username and password.
I already have the keys, now what?
Once Digi tells you what your passwords are, you will have to access the control panel of the router that you want to install as a substitute or complement to that of your operator. To do this, open a web browser and enter the address mentioned above. You should be able to access a website where you can enter the username and password to access the router. This information should be included on the router sticker.
Once inside the router configuration, the path to access the PPPoE menu may be different depending on the manufacturer. On a TP-Link router, to give an example, it would be enough to go to Basic > Internet and select ‘PPPoE’ in the ‘Internet Connection Type’ drop-down list. You could also access the menu by going to Advanced > Network > Internet.
