Starlink continues on its path to ensure that its services meet the maximum possible needs of users and, in this case, it has successfully tested a new connection technology. Using mobile gateway technology, it has managed to achieve 8 Gbps downloads in places where, naturally, it is not easy to achieve these performance levels.

A good part of Starlink’s business is related to bringing its satellite connectivity to a commercial environment. This has led to it being the preferred option for many cruise companies and also having a presence in other markets. Now, with the intention of meeting the needs of these clients, the entity is successfully testing a new connection.

High speed with no land in sight

Sailors will no longer have to shout for joy “land in sight” if they can stay connected to the internet and watch TikTok videos or do whatever else they fancy. That is what SpaceX’s Starlink company wants to do, offering this connection service that they have just tested and which has managed to achieve, more precisely, download speeds of 8,102 Mbps.

Speed test that Starlink has performed with one of its connections

It has not been confirmed, however, whether the test was carried out at sea or, for example, in the air. The truth is that the question remains, even if the most viable answer is the ocean. This means, on the other hand, that the service should be ready to offer high-level performance in either medium, regardless of whether there is land nearby or not.

A large-scale service

Starlink is expanding its offerings so that it can play an essential role for many businesses and users. A few months ago, it announced a new service aimed at communities that have difficulty accessing fiber connections. In this way, it offers them the possibility of creating a Starlink Gateway structure that enhances the service provided by local providers so that their customers can enjoy the Internet without having to turn to Starlink individually.

This is what is happening, for example, in a town called Unalaska, located near Alaska, where Starlink is already working in collaboration with the operator OptimERA. This type of problem-solving philosophy to make high-speed access common throughout the world is part of what is leading Elon Musk’s company to look for new solutions. The test they have just carried out and whose results have been published on X, as you can see in the image we added above, will respond to the need to improve services on the high seas or in very distant places.

Starlink Gateway Remote Installations

Thanks to this service, Starlink could provide many advantages to governments, transport companies and various global entities looking for a way to enhance their services. In one of his latest posts, Musk has mentioned that, through Starlink Gateway, his clients can achieve download speeds of 8 Gbps and upload speeds that will soon also reach the same capacity.

It must be considered that, for Starlink, these advances are a very solid business. Beyond what it can earn by offering this service in the air or at sea, it is already known that the creation of communities with this Gateway service, such as the one mentioned in Alaska, provides them with great benefits. To begin with, the creation of the facilities costs 1.25 million dollars, while afterwards the operators or companies that request it commit to a monthly payment of 75,000 dollars for each Gbps. With this income and benefits, it is logical that it is very profitable for Starlink to continue improving and try to continue breaking down the barriers to the connection they offer.
