Microsoft is making a series of changes to its applications and has decided to completely retire the Microsoft 365 extension for the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge internet browsers. In this way, this function will no longer receive support or security updates, bug fixes or technical support, so we will no longer be able to access our documents in a comfortable way through browsers. But when will the deadline for using the Microsoft 365 extension be? We break it down for you in the following lines.
Most users use the Word, Power Point or Excel applications to prepare and create documents, but they will no longer be able to do so through the Chrome and Edge browsers, since the extension will stop working as of January 15, 2024. In addition, the North American company has announced that the Microsoft 365 application will no longer be operational in the Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome web stores as an extension plugin.
Microsoft withdraws its Microsoft 365 extension
Microsoft has made the decision to withdraw the Microsoft 365 extension in the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, so that you will no longer receive updates or technical support from the technology giant. This extension allows users to have direct access to the most popular Microsoft applications as well as the latest documents.
It was also very intuitive to operate, as the app’s links act as shortcuts to the Microsoft 365 website, and when Word or Excel is selected, the home page for those tools is reflected on the Office website.
According to the latest reports, the app is quite popular as it is used by more than 6 million users on Chrome and more than 4 million on Edge. Despite this, these are not very high numbers, since Microsoft offers its products to billions of users.
Why is Microsoft removing the Microsoft 365 extension?
Currently, the apparent reasons are unknown, since the company has only indicated that it is best to uninstall the Microsoft 365 extension from the Chrome and Edge browsers now. To this end, a series of indications have been disseminated to make its extension disappear.
If you have the Microsoft 365 extension installed in Google Chrome, you need to go to Settings, right-click and select Remove from Chrome or go to Manage Extensions to remove the extension.
If the extension is in Microsoft Edge, tap Settings, right-click and select Remove from Microsoft Edge or go to Manage Extensions to uninstall the extension.
For many users it has been a real shame to have lost this important Microsoft function in the most common web browsers, since you could use all the tools without having to have Microsoft 365 installed on your computer. We will soon see the direction the company wants to take in this regard.
