Shared Netflix accounts have always been around. There has even been a time when the company itself talked about it, in press conferences and even in its own series. However, it has reached a point where it has stopped looking favorably on these accounts, and has started a crusade against them. We now know when its end will be and, most importantly, what Netflix is going to do to limit this.

2023 is going to be a difficult year for streaming platforms. Netflix, HBO, Spotify and many others want to end this practice as soon as possible and this year they are going to find a way to do it. Although, yes, using Netflix itself as a guinea pig.

In this way, recently Netflix has changed its legal conditions to make it clear how and with whom the accounts can be shared. In this way, for example, it is made clear that we can only share the account with people who live with us, in our personal location. And, for this, Netflix wants to force us to connect to the same Wi-Fi and play something every 31 days.

Netflix Manage Connections

Thus, the company will use the information of the devices and the IP to identify that, indeed, we live in the same home and not impose other limitations. In case of going on a trip, and we have to connect to a different network, we can do so by requesting a temporary access code, which the administrator will receive by mail and will have to provide us with.

If we don’t comply with these new rules, Netflix could block our account until we pay for our own subscription. Of course, the plans of having to pay a bonus per user with whom we share the account, for now, seem to have been parked, since the new conditions of use do not refer to it.

It will be very easy to bypass the restriction

Although we still have to see how this new control system is implemented, as described by Netflix it will be very easy to avoid. The only thing the administrator will have to do is set up a VPN server at home, which can be started on the PC, on a NAS, or on a micro-computer. And ask each of the people with whom he shares an account to connect to him once a month and play a piece of content.

By connecting to our private VPN, the device will access the content using the same personal IP of the account administrator. And, therefore, Netflix will believe that we are accessing from the same home. This way there will be no problem.

Another option will be to create a joint email account, and give all users access to it. In this way, when they are asked for the temporary password for reproduction, it is nothing more than accessing the email, entering the password and being able to continue viewing the content.

And finally, this change, for now, is only available on accounts in Spain (and other countries), but not on accounts in Turkey. Therefore, if we decide to pay for Netlix in Turkish liras, we will not only be able to have 4K for 6 euros per month, but also forget (at least for now) about this restriction.
