Russia no longer only has to worry about its offensive, but has recently seen Ukraine adopt a different strategy and begin an attack maneuver. What the country has done has been to use its drones massively with the intention of trying to destroy one of the Russian weapons from a distance. But why is it so important?
Ukraine has been acting with more confidence than usual for a few weeks now and is proposing a series of maneuvers that are likely to surprise the Russian government. They recently exposed the problems they were having with the Russian bombings and made it clear that they did not have the capacity to maintain the pace to which they were being subjected. For this reason, perhaps, they have decided to take the initiative.
They try to destroy a key Russian piece
At the moment, it does not seem that Ukraine has been successful in the particular maneuver it is trying to carry out and for which, according to news coming from the front, they are using drones. More precisely, they would be resorting to their kamikaze drones and it seems that they would have already launched two waves of attacks with a large number of units. It is unknown, in any case, if there are plans to try to make a third attempt, especially considering that the complex situation in Ukraine regarding the amount of weapons to which they have access is well known.
Why so much interest? What Ukraine is trying to destroy is Container 29B6, a large radar that gives Russia eyes in the sky. With its use they have the opportunity to carry out complete monitoring of everything that happens in the vicinity of the system, having a really solid capacity to detect possible enemy attacks. It is, in fact, one of Russia’s key pieces when it comes to keeping its facilities safe. And it is important to mention that they only have one of these systems even though, at the time, they considered building a second.
A range of 3000 kilometers
If Russia is trying to carefully protect this 29B6 system, it is because it has a capacity to detect enemy fire at a range of 3,000 kilometers. This is an important advantage over their rivals, since from their location in Kovylkino, they monitor all possible threats that they may encounter. It is important to keep two things in mind. The first of them is that this small Russian town of just over 20,000 inhabitants is not exactly close to the combat zone. Therefore, it is not a typical maneuver on the part of Ukraine and it is likely that it came as a surprise to the Russian side.
The second data to highlight is that it is surprising that, taking into account its purpose, the 29B6 did not detect that a wave of kamikaze drones were approaching the radar with the intention of crashing to try to destroy it. And, if Russia had detected it, it is quite disconcerting that they had not tried to prevent it with a defensive maneuver. Perhaps the explanation lies in the fact that the radar is designed to detect air attacks and that they have not thought about calibrating it for the possible presence of drones flying under certain circumstances.

On April 17, Ukrainian drones targeted the Russian 29B6 Container over-the-horizon radar located near Kovylkino in Republic of Mordovia, around 600km from the border with Ukraine, sources in HUR MO told Ukrainska Pravda.

We must also not forget that the radar, no matter how advanced and efficient it is, was originally introduced in 2013, so it is not a state-of-the-art piece either. However, experts in the sector usually agree that it is one of the best equipment that can be found in its field. Likewise, some sources indicate that the 29B6 radar has a design flaw: a weak point in the form of an area of 900 kilometers where it does not have the capacity to detect threats.
That would pose a risk to Russia and an opportunity for the Ukrainians to attack directly through that point, which may be what they have decided to do. For now, as we indicated, there is no evidence that Container 29B6 has been destroyed, while it is also unclear whether Ukraine will continue trying to destroy it. They possibly believe that by destroying it, they will gain an advantage that will help them continue this battle that seems to have no end.
