PLC devices are very interesting to improve coverage and have Internet in areas where it was very limited or it was not even possible to connect. However there are different specifications and not all are the same. In this article we are going to talk about why you should buy PLC with WiFi and avoid purchasing devices of this type that only allow you to connect devices by cable.

PLCs, better with WiFi

It is a fact that today we have a large number of devices that we connect to the Internet. Think about everything you have in your house normally. For example, a television, a tablet, perhaps an electronic book, several computers, mobile phones… You may even have many more Internet of Things devices, such as smart light bulbs.

Most of those devices are going to be connected wirelessly. Therefore, if you need to improve the connection in a specific area and you are going to buy PLC devices, the ideal is that they have WiFi. This will allow you to seamlessly connect all those devices wirelessly.

Keep in mind that some devices will be able to connect both by cable and Wi-Fi. For example, some televisions, game consoles or computers. In that case, you will be able to use your PLCs and connect them both by Ethernet cables and also wirelessly, depending on what is most interesting at any given time.

But if you buy PLC devices that only work by network cable, you would be limiting their use to a few devices. The rest you could not connect them and take advantage of the coverage improvement. For example a tablet or a mobile, you will not be able to access the Internet on them through the WiFi network. You can always increase the speed of PLCs.

Dual band, better for speed and stability

Beyond buying PLC devices that have WiFi, you must also make sure that they have dual band. This is important in order to achieve maximum speed and avoid stability problems that may appear. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands have their positive and negative points.

If you want maximum speed, the ideal is that you connect to the 5 GHz band. Of course, it has the disadvantage that it is more sensitive to distance and possible obstacles. Therefore, it is ideal to connect near the router but you may experience problems if you go too far from the device.

On the other hand, the 2.4 GHz band is the one that offers the most stability when you move away from the access point or there are many walls that can interfere. Of course, in this case you are not going to achieve maximum speed as you are going to get through the 5 GHz band. You will have to weigh which one compensates more in each case.

As you can see, acquiring PLC devices that have dual-band WiFi is a good idea to make the most of the available resources. In this way you will be able to connect to the network without problems, without the dreaded cuts appearing and having poor speed when downloading a file or watching a 4K video.

Therefore, if you are going to buy PLC devices and you doubt whether it is better to have only an Ethernet cable or also a wireless network, without a doubt this last option is ideal to avoid problems of any kind and to be able to connect more devices.
