Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications will receive a major facelift

Microsoft uses a color system so that users can quickly identify all the applications that are part of Office, with blue for Word and green for Excel being the two most popular. But, in addition, this same color is also found in the user interface.

The Redmond-based company has been using the same color palette inside Office applications for many years, so it was a matter of time before it underwent a renovation to also adapt to the design that Windows 11 launched.

A few weeks ago, we talked about the new font that would become native to all Office applications: Aptos, a font that will replace the traditional Calibri that has been with us for more than a decade and which in turn replaced the classic Times News. Roman.

Microsoft justifies the change in the default font of Office applications to adapt to monitors with high resolutions in order to improve the display of texts. But, in addition, the company that Bill Gates founded also plans to change the color palette used in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook applications in all available versions: Windows, macOS, iOS (it will arrive a little later) and Android for early September.

New color palette for Office

The first thing that we must be clear about the change in the design that the Office applications will receive is that the same primary colors will be maintained, so we must not learn new colors to be able to identify the applications once they are updated to the new design.

These changes are intended to improve the visualization of texts and emails, as well as the change of the default font from Calibri to Aptos. As we can see in the image on these lines that Microsoft has published, yellow has completely disappeared as a color within Office applications, a disappearance that is logical since, depending on the color calibration of the monitor, yellow can not be seen correctly on all computers, a problem that we will not find in other colors.

Microsoft has replaced the color yellow with dark green. In addition, the light blue color also receives a slight change with a darker shade of teal. These changes are focused on improving the contrast between the lines, shapes, and text that are available in all applications that are part of Office.

Although it is unlikely that this new theme and font will be poorly received by users, we will always have the possibility to return to the theme and font that all Office applications have used for the last 9 years. These changes will be available starting in September for both Microsoft 365 subscription apps and the Office online version.
