Mercadona becomes one of the first companies to use the DGT blind spot signal

Presented at the end of October 2021, the DGT blind spot sign is a new sticker designed to protect vulnerable users on urban roads (pedestrians, cyclists…). Mercadona has become one of the first companies to use it in its delivery trucks.

For voluntary use, this new signal is designed for delivery vehicles, merchandise distribution, urban buses, school buses and heavy trucks. Its objective is to indicate to vulnerable users in urban areas the importance of staying outside areas not visible to drivers.

The signaling of blind spots is the result of the work of the experts of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in collaboration with the city councils of Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Logroño and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

The municipalities that have collaborated with the DGT in the creation of the blind spot signal have committed to placing it in their fleet of vehicles.

Thus, Barcelona City Council will implement it in approximately 2,199 vehicles; Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) in another 800; the Madrid City Council in 2,600 vehicles; Zaragoza City Council in more than 600; and the Logroño City Council in another 79 public service vehicles.

Mercadona has now become one of the first public companies to use the blind spot signal in its fleet of delivery vehicles:

The DGT blind spot sign

The DGT’s blind spot signal is the first measure within a set of actions being taken in the European Union to reduce the risk of accidents by improving the driver’s visibility in delivery vans, buses and trucks.

The ultimate goal is to get a direct view of these drivers, but until advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) are incorporated into all vehicles, the option of signaling in the vehicle itself, warning of the existence of blind spots, may be helpful in preventing the accident.

The sign, whose placement is voluntary, affects passenger transport vehicles with more than 9 seats, including the driver, (vehicles of categories M2 and M3 according to the General Vehicle Regulations), goods transport vehicles of categories N1, N2 and N3 and waste transport vehicles in urban areas.
