Intentionally manipulating the license plates of your car or not wearing one of them is punishable. But what if you have no intention of making it difficult to read but, due to its poor state of conservation, the result is the same? In case you have a double license plate, for example, this is the tremendous fine of 6,000 euros that the DGT can impose on you.

Traffic has been warning drivers for decades that the numbers and letters that identify a vehicle (your car, its trailer, your motorcycle…) must be perfectly legible as stipulated by law. And for this reason, at any time, the authorities could stop you and even report and sanction you if you do not comply with this basic requirement.

The mechanism used by drug traffickers to hide the license plate

What happens is that this topic has become even more important in recent times as the systems for stopping violations (radars, Low Emission Zone cameras…) have spread throughout our geography. ), whose action is based on the identification of the vehicle and -later- of the driver from the license plate in question.

Thus, as the General Directorate of Traffic recalls again on its official Twitter account, there are many drivers who are expected to try to hide this data and, to do so, resort to the most rudimentary systems (such as simply covering the information with hand, when riding a motorcycle, or with something hanging from the trunk)… or, on the contrary, to the most sophisticated and illegal devices.

However, in addition to being illegal, if you have a double license plate, you will be causing the same effect, so you could get the same fine of 6,000 euros from the DGT. In addition, they could stop you for not driving the car in optimal conditions (it is easy for such an element to cut, catch on something or cause injuries to pedestrians) and ‘throw you’ on the ITV for the same reason.
