Since last September 27, the e-call system is an element that will be reviewed in the ITV and that can make you not pass it if it does not work well.

All new cars with up to 8 seats and light commercial vehicles approved in Europe as of March 31, 2018 must have the e-call emergency call system. And now, since last September 27 this new system will be subject to inspection at the ITV. If it does not work properly, it is reason for you not to pass the test.

The e-call system allows the user, in the event of a traffic accident, to make an emergency call and contact 112 to report the accident and request assistance. It also allows emergency services to know the location of the vehicle.

This technology is based on information received from sensors such as anti-roll and belt tensioners to send help to the scene of an accident if the driver or passengers do not respond to an emergency call.

On September 27, according to Europa Press, citing information from DEKRA ITV, Royal Decree 750/2022 came into force, which includes the e-call system as an element to be inspected at the ITV. The inspection of the SOS button, the methods, the causes of rejection and the assessment of deficiencies have been included in annexes I and III of said directive.

However, the ITV has not yet reviewed the emergency call system. AECA-ITV informs that they will begin to inspect it once the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism includes it in the ITV Station Inspection Procedure Manual. It is estimated that it will come into force from May 2023.

It is also reported that this e-call emergency call system is not mandatory in already registered vehicles that do not have this device, but it can be installed if it meets the technical requirements. It remains to be seen if the ITV will inspect this security system in the vehicles in which it is mandatory or in all those that have it installed.
