Max Verstappen leads the third and final free practice session in the United States.

After a Friday dominated by Ferrari, Max Verstappen and Red Bull have taken the lead. The Dutch driver, crowned two-time world champion two weeks ago in Japan, set the fastest time in the third free practice of the F1 United States GP, beating the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

Verstappen set the fastest time of the session after stopping the clock at 1m35.825s just seconds from the end of the final practice session. With new soft tires, the Dutchman beat Leclerc by three tenths – who will lose ten places on the grid for changing engine and turbo – and the other Ferrari, Sainz’s, by four.

What you need to know about the 2022 F1 US GP

Sergio Pérez was half a second behind his teammate Verstappen, followed in the same tenth by Lewis Hamilton, who left a good feeling with the Mercedes. Lewis is also the king on this track: he has won in five of the nine races since his arrival on the calendar in 2012.

Fernando Alonso, as in Free Practice 1, has set the sixth fastest time, although the Asturian has also fitted a new engine and will lose five positions on the grid on Sunday with respect to the position in which he qualifies in a few hours.

After Alonso, the other Mercedes, George Russell’s, stopped the clock, while Sebastian Vettel, Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten positions.

It is surprising to see the McLarens of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo far behind, who have finished in twelfth and fifteenth position.

The last in the table was Guanyu Zhou, who was only able to do one timed lap. Mick Schumacher was penultimate, surpassed even by Nicholas Latifi, eighteenth.
