Fernando Alonso will lose five places on the starting grid of the US GP after mounting a new combustion engine.
Fernando Alonso has released a new combustion engine in the United States F1 GP and for this he has received a penalty of five places, which he will have to fulfill on the starting grid this Sunday in Austin. Several riders have chosen to mount new components here, as it is a track where you can overtake.
In the United States, Alonso will use his sixth combustion engine of the season, exceeding the limit established by the regulations by three units. While the first penalty for using a new component is ten places, starting with the next unit, the penalty is only five places.
For this reason, Alonso will lose five places on the grid for tomorrow’s race compared to the result he achieves in tonight’s qualifying session (00:00). During this weekend, the Spaniard has shown enough pace to be in the ‘top 10’ and will be able to fight for points with his Alpine.
In Free Practice 1, Alonso finished sixth, before finishing far behind in a few practice sessions that did not show the real pace of the cars, as the session was dedicated to testing the experimental tires for the 2023 season. In Free Practice 3, the Alpine F1 was again sixth.
In addition to Alonso, other drivers have chosen to mount new engine elements in Austin, with which they hope to reach the end of the season. At the moment, Charles Leclerc has accumulated ten penalty positions after mounting a new combustion engine and a new turbo, while Pérez and Zhou have also received five penalty positions.
Before the start of tomorrow’s race, more drivers could be added to this list if they think it’s worth it for their qualifying position.
