Orbea Urrun eMTB

Any pro cyclist will defend that a bicycle has to be conventional and that it has to be the athlete, based on the leg, who goes as far as he wants or can. It is common that there is a certain rejection towards electric bicycles, but Orbea has launched a new model that aims to convince even the ‘haters’, the Orbea Urrun eMTB.

The objective of this electric bicycle is to serve as a gateway for those who want to access mountain biking with the advantages of electric assistance, and the result has been a model that combines an affordable price with lightness and considerable autonomy.

The brand has carried out a study that has given it the keys to the bicycle it had to develop: 23% of e-MTB users never enter technical terrain, 82% do not ride more than 60 kilometers and 21% do not exceed 30. With these data in hand, they have shaped the Urrun (which in Basque means ‘far’.

It has an aluminum frame that is lighter and stiffer than that of its predecessor, weighing just 2.7 kilos and integrating the engine in the lower part, with additional protections. Compared to the previous model, the bike is 15% lighter and 30% stiffer, weighing between 19 and 20 kilos depending on the version.

It mounts 29-inch wheels with wide 2.4″ tires, although the tire clearance admits up to 2.6″, and uses a 120mm fork.

The soul of the bicycle is the Shimano EP8 RS motor, which provides a torque of 60 Nm and has been specifically developed to offer maximum assistance between 75 and 95 pedal strokes per minute, seeking the most natural and efficient assistance possible that integrates with the pedaling rhythm of a cyclist.

It is powered by a 540 Wh battery, which improves the capacity of the one used by the Rise (360 Wh). However, thanks to the use of 21-700 cells with a higher energy density, the battery volume is not much higher. It is capable of granting a range to save 3,500 meters of unevenness and for about 8 hours of pedaling.

It is possible to incorporate a Range Extender, a range extender that adds another 252 Wh of energy.

To recharge the bicycle with guarantees, the company recommends the Smart Charger, an intelligent charger that adapts the charge to 2 or 4 amps based on different factors (charge cycles consumed, temperature, state of the cells, etc.) and thus manages to extend battery life by up to 30%.

In addition, it is available in two different configurations:

  • Urrun 10: Fox 34 Float Performance fork, Shimano Deore XT 1×12 drivetrain, Magura MT5 brakes, Race Face AR 30c wheels and OC MC20 100mm dropper post

  • Urrun 30: Marzocchi Bomber Z2 120 fork, Shimano Deore 1×10 drivetrain, Magura MT30 brakes, Orbea OC1 29c wheels and conventional aluminum seatpost

It is also possible to equip it with all kinds of optional extras, such as the 1,000-lumen Lezyne light, rack, saddlebags, kickstand, opt for conventional or telescopic seatposts of different lengths, the aforementioned Range Extender or that the wiring is completely internal.

The Orbea Urrun eMTB is now on sale, with a choice of three frame colors (Leo-Orange, Borealis-Blue and Black-Glitter) and four sizes (S, M, L and XL). Its price is 4,799 euros for the Orbea Urrun 10 and 3,799 euros for the Orbea Urrun 30.
