They take less time to recover autonomy and this is superior, however there is a problem for hydrogen cars to be a real alternative to electric cars: recharging points.
Hydrogen or fuel cell cars, such as the Toyota Mirai or the Hyundai Nexo are, to this day, examples of a very promising technology but with significant pitfalls for large-scale production.
Hydrogen cars in 2022: all models
hydrogen as fuel
Hydrogen has proven its worth as an automotive fuel: it is totally respectful of the environment and offers very similar features to models that use diesel and/or gasoline engines.
Compared to battery electric cars (EVs), they have advantages and disadvantages. Among the first that its recharging time is much shorter (they recover one hundred percent of the battery charge in a few minutes); at the same time that, as a general rule, they offer greater autonomy (in the case of the Mirai, for example, it reaches 700 km).
On the cons side: they are more expensive (we use the Toyota again as an example, which costs more than 70,000 euros) and, above all, it is very difficult to find where to refuel with hydrogen.
The big problem with hydrogen cars
This brings us to what is currently the big problem for hydrogen cars to compete with battery electric cars.
Although there are more and more projects to promote the production and use of hydrogen as fuel (especially the so-called green hydrogen that is generated from renewable sources), there are still very few recharging points available.
At the recent International Climate Summit (COP27) it was agreed to create a hundred hydrogen valleys that will facilitate the production, use and transport of this component; but with everything and with that it will still take time to see a sufficient number of hydrogen plants for public use (today, in Spain, there are only five hydrogen stations in all of Spain).
Even further away is the moment in which we have hydrogen recharging points at home and until that happens, battery electric cars and fuel cell cars will not be able to compete on equal terms.
