The Australian Grand Prix will be the third round of the 2023 Formula 1 season and, for another year, it is held at the Albert Park circuit, in the city of Melbourne. Australia, as well as being synonymous with getting up early for this part of the planet, is also synonymous with entertaining and fun races due to the challenge that this track represents.
The Albert Park Circuit made its debut on the calendar in 1996, occupying the space of Adelaide, which had been the venue for the event since 1985. It was decided to create a circuit around Albert Park, a large park from which it takes its name, using existing roads, making it an urban circuit with the challenges that this entails due to the proximity of the walls.
This Australian track has a total length of 5,278 kilometers, after the modifications made in the period in which there were no races, between 2019 and 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From the late 1990s and until then, its length was 5,302 (until 2002) or 5,303 km (until 2019).
It is a very followed race, both on the circuit and on television. Not surprisingly, in 2022, up to 419,114 fans accessed the circuit during the weekend, with 128,294 on the day of the race.
It is also a very popular event from home all over the world, as Albert Park is synonymous with a close battle for victory and overtaking to the limit. Mistakes, with their gravel loopholes, are penalized, as are the proximity of the walls and the high speeds reached on the mythical circuit.
Although Keke Rosberg was the first driver to win a Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide (1985), Damon Hill did it for the first time in Albert Park. Michael Schumacher, with four wins, is the one who has won the most times in Australia and McLaren, the most successful team.
Fernando Alonso, in 2006, achieved his only victory on this circuit, in his time as a driver for the Renault F1 team. The Asturian has tasted the sweetness of success here, but he has also suffered: in 2016 he had an accident that prevented him from competing in the Bahrain GP after a very strong blow.
