This would be electric cars in the apocalypse of The Last of Us

The Last of Us is one of the fashion series. HBO has done it again and, based on two recent “great games” (says one who has played both), has created a great television adaptation, possibly the most faithful ever made. Set in a post apocalyptic society, cars don’t have much of a role, but what if they did?

Without going into spoilers, during part of the series the protagonists travel in a van and something interesting happens: since 20 years have passed since the world went to hell, gasoline has degraded considerably, to the point of “being practically water”, which means that refueling has to be very common.

Leaving aside how precise the state of the fuel is after 20 years, since the most certain thing is that in a matter of months the gasoline would be useless and shortly after the diesel would follow the same path, the truth is that, as in the series, everything starts in 2003, the reality is that there are no electric cars in that world.

However, it is possible that in such a situation zero emissions were the only alternative: either with solar panels or using electricity sources such as dams, it is possible that they were more or less operational.

With this in mind, from Vanarama they have imagined what five current electric cars would be like in such a peculiar situation.

Hyundai Ionic 5

The Last of Us

For the Hyundai model, the focus is not so much on a vehicle that can do anything, but rather on a huge pile of wheels. Thanks to its bi-directional charging technology, it would be extremely useful as a power source that could bring electricity wherever it was needed.

Lamps, microwaves, refrigerators and a long list of small appliances, as well as tools could be used thanks to their connection of up to 3.6 kW.

Tesla Model 3

The Last of Us

With the smallest Tesla, the approximation has been slightly closer to what could be expected from a Mad Max-style vehicle, since it has reinforcement structures in vulnerable elements such as the headlights or the windshield.

In addition, the hood is used to attach solar panels that can extend its range, while at the rear it has a tank that allows it to collect rainwater while it is in motion.

Ford F-150 Lightning

The Last of Us

Ford’s best seller is one of the most common vehicles in the United States, where The Last of Us takes place, but in this case it is its 100% electric version, which is recently introduced.

It’s a real chunk, but it’s something that could be further enhanced with a bulldozer to clear the roads full of stranded cars, the rear box is perfect for mounting a machine gun post and since it has a towing capacity of 5 tons, it’s quite a pack mule.

Rimac Fridge

The Last of Us

Definitely, a zombie apocalypse (or infected, to be more precise on this occasion), is not the best place for an electric hypercar that counts its horses by thousands and is designed to achieve lightning acceleration, but a way has been devised to do it more capable.

It has a raised ride height, to which kart-like underbody protection has been added, to make it easier to get through the rows of clickers.

opel corsa

The Last of Us

We have left the most peculiar case of all for last, and that is that here the electric Opel Corsa has become a kind of buggy with off-road capabilities. The roof and rear doors have been removed to lighten it as much as possible and thus gain autonomy, but surely the widened axles and off-road tires make up for the kilos lost.
