Alexa, the famous Amazon assistant, has conquered our homes with its ability to answer questions, control devices and play music through voice commands. However, some users experience the refusal to play Spotify. Is it a compatibility problem?

It is not normal that Alexa does not play Spotify if you have both services correctly linked and configured. Amazon’s assistant is compatible with the music streaming platform, and you should be able to play music from this streaming service without any problems. However, there are cases where technical difficulties or conflicts may arise that prevent songs from being played via a smart device.

the songs stop

Alexa needs a stable internet connection to play music. If there are interruptions or fluctuations in the Wi-Fi connection, this can affect the playback of songs and cause them to stop suddenly.

Also, while Amazon Assistant and Spotify are compatible, integration issues between the two services can occasionally arise. This may be due to software updates or changes to the APIs used to communicate between them, which may affect smooth song playback.

There may also be issues with the Spotify account linked to your Alexa device. Check that your account is active, that you’re logged in correctly, and that the authorization between Alexa and the app is set up properly. It is also important that you keep your payments up to date if you have the Premium version. Another reason why some songs stop suddenly is because they may be subject to restrictions. If you try to play restricted content, the playback may stop abruptly.

If you experience this issue on a recurring basis, you can try to fix it by restarting your Alexa device, checking the internet connection, and making sure your accounts are properly linked. If the issue persists, it is recommended to contact Amazon or Spotify support for further assistance.

Spotify as default player

If there is some unknown reason that causes this incompatibility, we can force its reproduction by assigning it as the default player. If you want Alexa to quickly play music without having to mention “on Spotify”, you can set it up by following these simple steps:

  • Open the Alexa app on your Android or iOS device.
  • Tap the “More” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Select “Settings”.
  • Tap on “Music and podcasts”.
  • Choose the “Choose default music player” option.
  • From the list of options, select Spotify and tap “DONE”.

Once you’ve set up the app, you won’t have to say “on Spotify” with every voice command. For example, if you want to play a playlist, just say, “Alexa, play Discovery Weekly.” If you want to play a specific song, say: “Alexa, play [Nombre de la canción]«.

Restart Alexa

If, despite having linked your Spotify account and set it as the default music player, you’re still having trouble playing music, a reset can help fix the problem. Soft reset is one of the basic troubleshooting steps to try when it is not working properly, such as not responding to commands.

The steps to do it are:

  • Disconnect the device from Alexa.

  • Wait at least a minute.
  • Plug the Alexa device back in and turn it on again.

This process of unplugging, waiting, and plugging back in is known as a soft reset or power cycling. By following these steps, you allow the device to reboot and refresh its settings, which may resolve temporary issues or software conflicts.

Unpair the device

If you’re experiencing issues with the app on your Echo device, removing and adding the Echo device back to your Spotify account may help resolve the issue. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Open the Spotify app on your mobile.
  • Access the application settings.
  • Scroll down and find the Devices section.
  • Within the Devices section, you will find an option called “Connect to a device”.
  • Selecting that option will display a list of all the devices linked to your account.
  • Find your Echo Dot in the list and tap the three dots icon next to it.
  • Select the “Forget this device” option.

This will remove the link between your Echo device and your Spotify account. You can then reconnect your Echo device by following the normal setup steps. This process can help to re-establish the connection between Spotify and your Amazon device, allowing you to enjoy smooth music playback again.
