Now three years since the launch of the PlayStation 5 generation, it seems like a good time for Sony to shake the shaker and put a new model on the market that manages to reduce the dimensions of its latest console and, in the process, means a reduction in price for what we have to pay right now. Today we are going to analyze how much the future PS5 Slim could cost taking into account both background and the current market situation.

Launching a smaller console at a cheaper price is something that has been present generation after generation at Sony, without skipping any of the PlayStation. Therefore, although it has not been officially announced, we can assume that sooner or later – perhaps this Christmas – there will be PS5 Slim. The price should be lower than what we currently pay to buy a PlayStation 5, but how much cheaper?

PlayStation Slim Background

As we said, each generation has sooner or later had a Slim model, which comes onto the market with reduced dimensions and a more reasonable price. It happened since the first generation of PlayStation that was launched in 1995 in Europe, when several years later, in 2000, the one known as PS One was put on sale, smaller in size and weight thanks to a design in which the handles were curved. corner edges, the power supply was external, the Reset button was removed and also a couple of ports.

In the case of PlayStation 2, released in 2000, we had to wait until 2004 to see the reduced model, PS2 Slim. Due to its slimmer profile, it did not contain the 3.5-inch expansion bay and therefore was not compatible with the internal hard drive. It also did not have an internal power supply.

The same move was repeated years later with PS3, launched in 2007 in Europe. In this case, it is even more necessary to launch an economical model because Sony committed one of the biggest mistakes in its history with PlayStation: putting it on sale for 600 euros. PS3 Slim cost only 300 euros at launch in 2009, half of the original launch. As the PlayStation 3 was also a fairly huge model in size, the Slim model was 33% smaller and 36% lighter. Not content with that, in 2012 they launched an even smaller model, known colloquially as PS3 Super Slim, being 20% smaller and 25% lighter than the previous Slim. In this case the prices were from 249 euros.

The most recent case is from the last generation. PlayStation 4 went on sale in 2013 with a recommended price of 399 euros (which killed its competitor Xbox One since the announcement at E3 2013 one day after Microsoft’s 499 euros). Three years later, the PS4 Slim went on sale, becoming the new standard model after the launch alongside the PS4 Pro, a more powerful model of the 2013 console with 4K compatibility. In fact, the design was based on being a thinner model than the PS4 Pro instead of restyling the original. This fine model was put on sale at a price of 299 euros, 100 less than the original MSRP and the one with the PS4 Pro.

How much could PS5 Slim cost?

Taking the closest one as a reference, that of the PlayStation 4 Slim, we could consider the discount of 100 euros on the recommended price of the “Fat” model valid. It must be taken into account that the current prices of PlayStation 5 for the first time in its history are not those of launch, but to be more expensive (due to the issue of inflation, according to official causes).

The PlayStation 5 model with a disc reader originally cost 499 euros, but is now 549 euros from 2022. The same thing happened with the PS5 Digital Edition, which went from costing 399 euros to 449 euros. In this way, the possible price of the PS5 Slim would be marked by the current prices of the “Fat” models and not by those they had when they went on sale for the first time in the winter of 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. If the Slim model comes with an integrated disk reader, we could consider that it will cost 449 euros, which would be a price reduction of 100 euros, a slight discount that could well be worth it.

There are rumors that the Slim model may be digital, but have an attachable disk drive. In this case, we would bet more on a base price of 349 euros for the console and another additional 49.99 euros for the reader accessory. The price of the complete pack would remain at about 399 euros, the original price of the Digital Edition model, which would be a good argument to have a model capable of executing physical and digital copies at the lowest historical price. This would also be in line with the court documents from the Microsoft vs FCC hearing for the purchase of Activision-Blizzard, where Redmond seemed to confirm the existence of the Slim model of its main competitors, suggesting that the device would cost $400 and that it would be would launch later this year.
