You will agree with me that a drag race between two supercars is entertainment that no one can refuse. However, the craziest thing you’ll see today isn’t two super expensive sports cars racing down a long straight, but these drag races between modified 3,000bhp trucks taking part even with loaded trailers.
As part of the Big Rig Challenge drag races, high-capacity trucks race down a straightaway with the goal of crossing the finish line first. That leaves us with impressive images, huge puffs of black smoke from their chimney-shaped exhausts and horsepower that twists the chassis of these trucks.
Drag races between trucks with so much power that they bend their chassis
The star of the video is a heavily modified Peterbilt 359 (the one in green and black). This truck is a favorite among drivers and ushered in the era of long-distance racing trucks in 1967. During the first 20 years of production, the 359 became a legend for its capability, extensive options and intelligent use of materials.
The Peterbilt 359’s chassis was aluminum and owners could specify it with an aluminum cab and body to keep weight down. But the real highlight was under the hood, where among the nearly endless engine and transmission configurations available, the buyers’ favorite was the Caterpillar 3408 engine.
It is a huge 18.0-liter V8 that produced around 450 hp of power, needed more than 46 liters of oil and almost 55 liters of coolant. The truck featured in the video has received a long list of modifications that make it a very fast and powerful machine, even when hauling a huge loaded trailer.
