Currently, there are two operating systems for Smart TV that allow us to make the most of the properties of our television. On the one hand, we have Tizen, present on Samsung TVs, while, on the other hand, we have WebOS, the favorite system on LG TVs. However, apart from these, we can find other alternatives, much more free and compatible, that other brands are betting on and that allow us to get even more out of the television: we are talking about Google TV and Android TV.
Android TV was Google’s first project to delve into television systems. Broadly speaking, it is the same operating system that we use on mobile phones (very much in quotes), but designed for screens measuring tens of inches. This system has been in place since its launch, and continues to receive updates today. But, in 2020, Google created another similar system called “Google TV.” And this is where the problems begin.
Differences between Google TV and Android TV
Broadly speaking, they may seem like the same system with a different name. And we weren’t too wrong. Although it is true that there are many “nuances” that we must clarify. Both systems are compatible with the same applications, streaming services, games, etc. We have access to the Google Play Store to search for and download new apps, and we can even install the applications we want using their corresponding APK. We also have access to the voice assistant, Chromecast support, etc. Therefore, one way or another, we will be able to do the same thing with both.
The main difference is in the customization layer. Android TV, being an older system, is more app-focused. In the launcher we can see a list of installed apps, and recommendations of other apps that may be useful to us. But it does not recommend content to us. However, Google TV does. This system uses machine learning to know what we like and interest, and directly recommend content according to our tastes.
Android TV is a perfect option for those who use apps, games and play their own series and movies locally, on LAN or from a pendrive. It is enough to know how to find the correct applications (Kodi, Plex, etc.). However, Google TV is designed for streaming. The system integrates with Netflix, Disney+, HBO, etc. and recommends content according to our tastes. It is a much smarter system that is also very focused on the smart home.
Which is better?
As we have explained, both systems are very similar, if not equal. The main difference is the layer of customization it offers on top. What we could call on mobile phones as a “launcher”.
If we have to choose which is better, our preference would be Google TV. The reason is very simple: it is a much more modern system and offers a renewed experience, more adapted to the current times. When we buy a TV that is neither Samsung nor LG, it will surely come with this system, which is synonymous with long-term support, and less planned obsolescence. Furthermore, at the end of the day, in one way or another, we can do the same as with Android TV.
But, if we don’t have a Smart TV, and we don’t want to buy a Chromecast or a Fire Stick, most devices (like those from Xiaomi) will come with Android TV. And, except for smart recommendations and functions, it will allow us to do the same.
