Streaming platforms continue to continually fight to see which is the absolute leader in Spain. On this occasion, according to GECA’s OTT barometer, Prime Video is at the top in terms of streaming. And, despite adding advertising to its service, it is above Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Movistar Plus+…

It seems that the figures for Amazon’s streaming platform are on the rise. Even though Prime Video already has two plans, one with and one without advertising, for the moment it has not affected users to keep their subscription active. Hence it is the streaming leader in Spain according to the latest GECA report. What is surprising is that it is above Netflix and that Disney+ falls, while HBO Max accelerates its growth.

Almost 70% streaming share

Amazon’s OTT is the streaming platform with the most penetration in Spain. It has almost 70% share in streaming (69.9%), followed by Netflix and Disney+. Furthermore, during this latest report a growth of up to 2.8% can be seen compared to the last GECA report. Therefore, the trend of this platform continues to be positive.

In addition to Prime Video and Netflix, one of the services that is experiencing a significant increase is HBO Max. This is largely due to the agreement it reached with Movistar. And it has been integrated into Total Fiction’s plans for Movistar Plus+ for some time now. This explains that it now has a share of up to 31.4%.

As for the rest of the options, as can be seen in the previous graph, Movistar Plus+ is growing, as is SkyShowtime (which is also already part of the Movistar catalog). On the other hand, other services such as DAZN, Atresplayer Premium, Apple TV+ or Movistar Plus+ Lite fall in market share. However, in the case of Lite, it must be taken into account that it can no longer be contracted since last year, so it is normal that it will drop to the benefit of the new OTT of the Spanish operator. And all because it is the new bet to gain users from other platforms (for a price of 14 euros for clients of other companies or for 12 euros if you are from O2).

Subscribers with an advertising-supported plan

In the case of Netflix, which had a share of 64%, this figure also increases. And an important fact is that it is discovered that 30.4% of the users of this service already access it through the advertising-supported plan. Another of the key points of this report is the fact that, on Disney+, the number of users with a plan with advertising It already reaches 25.4%.

On the other hand, we must also take into account SkyShowtime, which since April 23 already has a plan with advertising. In this case, 23.6% of users already indicate that they would unsubscribe, while almost 76.4% will continue betting on the platform or even change to the plan with ads.

Although, we will have to wait until the next report to see how much Prime Video and SkyShowtime’s commitment to advertising-supported plans really affects. And all because the data that has been collected in this wave of GECA ranges from April 2 to 16.
