Telefónica currently covers 89% of the Spanish population with the 5G 3,500 band. Now, the Spanish teleco has focused on continuing to improve its infrastructure to be able to cover rural areas with the best possible quality over the next year and a half.
Camilo José Cela University, in Madrid, is celebrating these days the V 5G Observatory. During this morning, Sergio Sanchez, Director of Operations, Network and IT at Telefónica Spain, has been analyzing the current situation in the sector. In his speech, he highlighted that 2025 has been the year of the “5G consolidation” by Telefónica, ensuring coverage of more than 89% throughout Spain, as reported by the media El Español.
“With the 3,500 band, which is the good one, we lead the deployment and we are already in more than 1,000 municipalities; with the 700 band, which is the one that gives us coverage, we reach more than 3,000”. Furthermore, Movistar is looking to go one step further and is working to reach a greater number of territories with 5G SA networks. It also states that it is currently available in more than 50 locations nationwide.
The importance of rural Spain
One of the aspects that has been highlighted during the presentation has been the intention of Telefónica to achieve a greater presence in rural Spain, usually punished by the lack of infrastructure by telephone operators. The Spanish teleco has stated that it is working on the rural 5G plan with the administration to be able to carry out “coverage to areas that have a smaller number of inhabitants in only 18 months”.

Publicly announcing that its objective is to collaborate with other operators in order to have a 100% 5G coverage in rural Spain.
