Which one interests you more, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio or the Alfa Romeo Tonale? We analyze the two SUVs of the Italian firm and choose the best purchase option.
The new Alfa Romeo Tonale has come with plenty of arguments to become the new best-seller of the Italian firm. It offers everything the European buyer looks for in an SUV, but is it good enough to beat its big brother? To find out, we are going to face the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the Alfa Romeo Tonale.
We are going to do it in a technical comparison based on the official data provided by the manufacturer. We will analyze sections such as the dimensions, the trunk, the range of engines, the standard equipment and the prices. At the end we will expose the strengths of each model and we will help you choose which model may interest you the most.
Dimensions
Let’s start with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the largest SUV of the Milan firm. In this case, its body measures 4,685 mm long, 1,905 mm wide and 1,965 mm high, all on a platform with a 2,820 mm wheelbase.
On the other hand, we have the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, the newcomer to the brand, which offers exterior dimensions of 4,530 mm long, 1,840 mm wide and 1,600 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,635 mm.
Trunk
As a result of this difference in exterior dimensions, the Stelvio has a trunk with a volumetric capacity of 525 litres. However, thanks to the rear seats with folding backrests, this figure can increase to 1,600 liters once folded.
The trunk is important and in the case of the Tonale its interior space is quite well used to offer a cargo compartment with a capacity of 500 liters. The backrests of the rear seats can also be folded down, in which case the cargo volume reaches 1,550 litres.
Engines
In the case of Alfa Romeo’s largest SUV, the mechanical options include a 2.2-litre diesel with 160, 190 and 210 hp, while the petrol engines are a 2.0-litre turbo with 200 and 280 hp, and the twin-turbo V6 with 2.9 liters with 510 hp from the Stelvio QV. The engines are associated with eight-speed automatic transmissions and there are rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.
For its part, the Tonale offers a different approach. We have a 1.6-liter diesel with 130 hp and a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline with Mild Hybrid technology that offers 130 and 160 hp of power. The changes are automatic double clutch with six or seven speeds and the power is sent exclusively to the front train.
Standard equipment
Among the standard equipment of the Stelvio (Super finish) we find the 8.8-inch touch screen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charger, 18-inch wheels, electric mirrors, involuntary lane departure warning, cruise control active, rear camera, xenon headlights, ambient lighting and hands-free access, among others.
For its part, the Tonale (Super finish) includes 18-inch wheels, emergency braking, keyless start, light and rain sensor, climate control, parking sensors, speed assistant, lane departure assistant, speed limiter, signal recognition, LED headlights, 10.25-inch screen, 12.3-inch digital panel, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Prices
Regarding the price of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the model is available from 53,550 euros with the Super finish and the 160 hp 2.2 JTDM engine with eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive. With the promotional discounts already applied, this price is reduced to 48,784 euros.
In the case of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, it has a starting price of 35,600 euros with the Super finish and the 130 hp 1.6-liter diesel engine with six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Promotional discounts are not applied at this time.
conclusion
As you can see, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is 155mm longer, 65mm wider and 365mm taller than the Alfa Romeo Tonale, as well as having a 185mm longer wheelbase. Despite the difference in measurements, the Stelvio only offers 25 liters more boot space than the Tonale, and 50 liters more when the rear seats are folded down.
The offer of motorizations is very different between both models. The Stelvio has more varied and powerful mechanics, while the Tonale is committed to electrification with Mild Hybrid technology as a letter of introduction and its ECO label from the DGT.
The standard equipment is very complete in both models, although it is more up-to-date in the Tonale as it is a considerably newer car. Prices, even without applying discounts on the Tonale, the new Alfa model is cheaper than the largest SUV, specifically about 13,000 euros less.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is, therefore, an interesting option due to its compact dimensions, its good trunk, the offer of electrified engines, the most up-to-date standard equipment and prices. However, the Stelvio is a bigger car, with a very spacious interior and a more premium approach, as well as giving you the choice of more engines with more power.
