The registrations of the Honda X-ADV (presentation) have catapulted it to the top 5 of motorcycles, of more than 125 cc not scooters, best-selling in Spain, a ranking of which you have a video. The creation of this urban adventurer segment belongs to the winged firm, but many other brands are going to join the bandwagon of this crossover design, starting with this Aprilia SR GT. That yes, those of Noale are the first to introduce it in the 125 cc scooter segment, available to a much broader public by driving license regulations, it is enough to have the car with 3 years old. It will also be available in the SR GT 200 version, with a few more horsepower but a very complete boost from its 174 cc engine, which already requires the owner of the A2 in Spain to drive it (new traffic law).
The keys to its design lie in these very short overhangs, which generate a higher and more compact but forceful visual image thanks to the little fairing it has. In addition, with the central tunnel they provide the necessary GT touch, as well as sporty, joining both parts of the scooter: the handlebar and the seat. A handlebar that stands out, at first glance, for its resemblance to segments such as the naked as it is of considerable width and is completely naked before the driver. With this detail you imagine, at first, an agile and dynamic scooter with good control of the front axle.
This design would not be the same without the headlight groups, which maintain the Full LED light signature that we see in other Aprilia models such as the Tuono (presentation). Its pointed daytime running lights and the central one for the long ones not only seem to illuminate well, we couldn’t verify it when driving during the day, but they also give it the key racing touch to be the urban sister of the rest of the range.
The Aprilia SR GT is available in a 125cc and 200cc version, without any aesthetic or dynamic changes.A family that is largely characterized by the choice of colors. In this case, we have the classic Aprilia SR GT with shades of Aprilia Black, Street Gray and Infinity Blue. They all come standard with gray footpegs, passenger grab handles and side fenders. In addition, for 100 euros more we can add the Sport package with RSV4-style graphics (new) and satin Street Gold, Iridium Gray and Red Raceway tones, combined with red wheels and a two-tone black and gray saddle in addition to the stitching red on the upholstery.
To finish the aesthetic section, which is undoubtedly its strong point, the license plate on the wheel manages to sharpen the tail even more. This stylized silhouette, which may be liked by more than one, has not quite fit me because of how visible the rear shock absorbers are. Of course, seen in motion and during the route, you end up liking it more by being able to observe the thin and also inclined LED turn signals more cleanly.
Two versions, two different audiences
The Aprilia SR GT 125cc will sell better in Spain due to the possibility of driving it with a B license. Before going on to talk about the engines and powers of the SR GT 125 and 200, let’s talk about its height. As a scooter it should be democratic, both for women and men and of all sizes. As you always ask us about the height, and the possibility of acquiring it despite being of a contained size, I will tell you that, with my 1.60 meters tall, I arrive on the balls of my feet. It’s fair enough at 799mm of seat height but being so light, weighing just 144kg with a full tank (148kg on the SR GT 200), it’s easy to get the confidence to maneuver and stop with it. Also, if you are shorter, you can sneak into the space provided by the tunnel between the handlebar and the seat, which, in my case, allows me to reach with all the sole. I also found it comfortable and soft for the passenger, with the handles in a good position and a natural bend in the knees.
The height up to the seat is unavoidable if we want to benefit from a versatile scooter, even with a certain off-road character despite not having a cycle part focused on it. In order to overcome urban obstacles such as sidewalks, Aprilia has given it a height of 175 millimeters from the ground. Despite this distance, it does not feel unstable in the corner, much less do you have the feeling of losing control or feeling over what is going through the tires. Mixed Michelin Anakee Street tires of 110/80 and 130/70 at the rear, shod on medium light alloy rims of 14” at the front and 13” at the rear, fulfilling both in agility and poise at scooter speeds.
The SR GT 200 is more suitable for a motorcycle public, with an A2 license or more. A scooter that will be marketed in two variants, with two different powers. First is the most salable in the Spanish market, the 125, with a single-cylinder I-Get Euro 5 engine with electronic injection, four-valve distribution and liquid cooling. It has a maximum power of 11 kW (about 15 hp) at 8,750 rpm and a torque of 12 Nm at 6,500 rpm.
Then there is the Aprilia SR GT 200, which also features a new 174 cc block, with an output of 13 kW (17 hp) at 8,500 rpm and a torque of 16.5 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The only difference, aesthetic, that we will see between them is the small radiator on the right side and the pattern of its protective plastic.
The SR GT 125, on the other hand, will be ideal for urbanites looking for a different and daring style.Taking into account the price difference, which we will talk about later, for motorcycle license users, the 200 has a more forceful thrust when turning the fist. Acceleration is its biggest advantage, as is recovery which helps to feel a fuller engine throughout the rev counter. During the section of curves I was able to test both versions, noticing there the difference that did not seem so much when comparing the powers of 15 to almost 18 CV between the two. If you are going to make this type of journey, even sporadically, and you can go to the 200: don’t think about it.
Both release the CVT transmission with a larger clutch that generates a homogeneous, more linear and continuous power curve. They also have the Start&Stop system as standard for the entire range, which is activated between 1 and 5 seconds after stopping if it has reached the correct temperature. The only but is that, at the time of starting, you must warn beforehand with a very short and fast touch of the accelerator. This technology means that, according to the firm, consumption in the WMTC cycle stands at 2.5 l/100 km for the SR GT 125. That, added to the 9-liter tank, grants a range of close to 350 kilometers.
How’s the SR GT going?
The position of the SR GT is sportier than the average of its segment, also its behavior. They share almost all the components between the 125 and the 200 with a front fork with Showa bars of 33 millimeters in diameter and 122 millimeters of travel. At the back, it has Showa shock absorbers adjustable in preload in 5 positions and with 102 millimeters of travel. Its behavior is pleasant, with a somewhat dry setting at the back for forceful potholes but the necessary stability on twisty and fast roads. I value it as something positive.
The driving position is slightly sportier than usual in the GT segment. The placement of the feet in the front area is not quite comfortable, even less so for someone over 1.60 as is my case: the knees bend a lot and it is somewhat unnatural. I did not like the distance of the levers, which are not adjustable and are too far for small hands. In addition, its feel is either all or nothing, especially because of the front brake, so it’s time to get used to it.
Its lightness makes it easy for any type of user, in the same way as its 14 and 13-inch wheels. In no case do they go wrong with technological equipment with the named full LED lights with the light signature of Noale. The digital instrumentation with LCD screen seemed somewhat old-fashioned to me, but it has the necessary information and incorporates Aprilia MIA Connectivity (optional) to manage phone calls and messages, as well as play music. By the way, neither of them fit full-face helmets under the seat unless they are very small with 25 liters of capacity. The only differences are found in the braking. For the 125 they bet on the CBS combined braking, which will be available later with ABS but €100 more budget. In the 200 it comes as standard, so if we look at its prices they would be as follows:
- SR GT 125 starts at 3,999 euros, 4,099 with ABS as S version.
- SR GT Sport from 4,099 / + ABS = 4,199
- SR GT 200 from 4,399 euros.
As I mentioned before regarding the price, and since I have the A motorcycle license, I would go head to the Aprilia SR GT 200 model and its 200 euros difference. I would also go for the ABS (front) versions when they become available, no need to wait for them if you already need that scooter. Nor would I buy it without the trunk or metal box available as an option but necessary in case I move with a backpack, bag or leave the helmet comfortably after my trips. Plus, it looks great on you.
