Attention, question(s): can I pass the ITV in an autonomous community other than the one where I reside? Are the tests the same? Why is it sometimes a good idea to do so?

A few days ago we were talking about mobile ITVs and we explained that their raison d’être is that, although Spain has a fairly large network of inspection stations, sometimes it is not easy to reach it. This and seeing the difference in price that there are some autonomies and others has led us to another question: can the ITV be passed in an autonomous community other than the one I live in?

Although the prices are not set at the national level, the Vehicle Technical Inspection Procedure Manual (ITV) is. This means that wherever you go, the tests to be carried out will be the same.

Can I pass the ITV in an autonomous community in which I do not reside?

To answer our question, we turned to the Spanish association that represents a high percentage of the ITV stations that provide service in Spain, AECA-ITV.

The experts of the association explain that yes, it is possible to pass the technical inspection in an autonomous community to which you have fixed your residence since “the law does not contemplate a provision that obliges to pass the ITV in a certain place”.

“In fact, if your car is registered in a community, and at the time you have to pass the inspection you are on vacation or working in another autonomous community, you can book your appointment at the ITV station that best suits you” , they add.

Reasons to pass the ITV in another city

Being on vacation or displaced to another autonomy for work reasons at the time your car has to pass the ITV is one of the reasons that can lead you to look for an ITV station in another city.

But there are also drivers who decide to change province to pass the ITV for financial reasons. We anticipated it in the first paragraph: the difference in prices between some autonomous communities and others is more than 180%, so if there is not an excessive distance it is worth doing a few more kilometers for the inspection.

In this regard, from AECA-ITV they remember that a long time ago it was no longer mandatory to pass the second ITV in the same station as the first in case of a negative or unfavorable result. “If for any reason, the vehicle does not pass the inspection successfully the first time, you can carry out the next inspection at any ITV station in Spanish territory,” they state.
