It was over in less than a second!
Carlos Sainz was close to victory today at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he fought until the last lap of the race against Max Verstappen who had to give everything to maintain first place. The man from Madrid has completed his best race of the season, which shows that he is just getting the pulse of the Ferrari F1-75.
“I am not satisfied”, is the first thing that Carlos Sainz has declared to the DAZN F1 microphones after getting on the podium at the Canadian GP and touching his first victory in the premier class. The Spanish driver explained that he had been too close to be fully happy with the final result.
“I was too close to be satisfied. I had a good rhythm and I was very comfortable, being faster than Max,” explained Carlos. “The strategy has been crucial. Without the last Safety Car, it would have been difficult for him to pass me, because he wasn’t getting to me quickly. Then the safety car came out and we had to stop”.
“We have been very fast and we have pressed… but it has not been enough to pass Max”, concluded the Ferrari driver, who started third and after only four laps was already second after passing Fernando Alonso.
The good pace of the rider from Madrid was reflected in the achievement of the fastest lap, the second of his racing career after the one achieved at the 2020 Styrian GP. The end of Carlos’ race was brilliant, with a magnificent pursuit of Verstappen and without errors, putting pressure on the Dutchman to snatch the victory, but in the end they lacked a few tenths to overtake him.
Second place is Carlos’ best result this season and in F1, having finished in the same position at the Bahrain GP and Monaco this year. The Spaniard remains in sixth position in the Drivers’ World Championship, just nine points behind George Russell (5th) and 24 behind Leclerc (3rd), who today has come back from penultimate position to fifth.
