OpenAI is the company that sets the pace in the artificial intelligence market and wants to keep it that way. For this reason, this afternoon it made the news again by announcing many improvements to its assistant, better known as ChatGPT. GPT-4o, the “o” is from “omni”, is the new version of the artificial intelligence assistant par excellence. OpenAI defines it as a step in the interaction between human and machine, making everything more natural and accepting any type of media as input. That is, it can receive text, audio, image or a combination of these elements. In fact, it’s so powerful that it can respond in just 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds (this is similar to a human’s reaction time).
One more step towards total AI
This new version matches the performance of GPT-4 Turbo in English text and code. It has improved significantly in languages other than English, where it is much faster and the API consumes 50% less resources. Overall, it is better in all aspects, being another step towards that improved interaction between human and machine.
Before the release of GPT-4o, latencies were 2.8 seconds (GPT-3.5) and 5.4 seconds (GPT-4). Looking at the figures that have been announced for this new version we see how the jump is significant. OpenAI has not hesitated to show a comparison with other AIs such as Claude 3 Opus or Gemini Pro 1.5. GPT-4o shows itself better in practically all areas.
Continuing with the advantages of this new model, we know that it will be free while version 4.0 will continue to be paid. This is what Mira Murati, the company’s technology director, has assured. The announcement of this new version comes amid rumors about the company, the launch of a search engine that can turn the foundations of the Internet upside down and even an agreement with Apple to be the AI of the bitten apple.
In addition, an application for computers has arrived. Regarding availability, the company has explained the following: «GPT-4o’s text and image capabilities are starting to roll out today in ChatGPT. We’re making GPT-4o available on the free tier and for Plus users with up to 5x message limits. We will be releasing a new version of Voice Mode with GPT-4o in alpha within ChatGPT Plus in the coming weeks.
