Up to 200 euros of fine

According to data from 2022, about 80 percent of Spaniards suffer from some type of visual problem and that is why the DGT has become serious to prevent drivers who need it from using either glasses or contact lenses. In case of not doing it and being warned by the traffic agents, the fine to which they are exposed is 200 euros.

But, how can the agents know if the driver who has been stopped needs some type of glasses or contact lenses? The answer is simple, it is hidden on the back of the driver’s license. There are those numbers unknown to the general public, the secret codes that collect different peculiarities for each driver.

Also pay attention to codes 01.02

In the case of needing glasses for driving due to some type of visual problem and being detected in the mandatory medical examination prior to obtaining the license, it must appear on the back in code 14. If the driver habitually wears contact lenses, then the codes that appear are 01.02.

And what happens if you wear your glasses, but you don’t have a spare in the car? Well, here we solve a very recurring urban legend, the one that says that you can get a fine for that. The reality is just the opposite and in this respect the DGT confirms that it is advisable to carry a spare part, but if it is not carried it does not imply a sanction.

The fine for driving without glasses or contact lenses when they are mandatory is not one of the serious ones that can be imposed on you. It is valued at 200 euros and has a discount for early payment that leaves the amount at 50 percent. In addition, another advantage that you must take into account in case of being fined: this infraction does not subtract points.
