The Hyundai i30 competes as a sedan and station wagon against the popular Hyundai Tucson SUV. Which of the three is the most logical?

All three Korean compacts feature a confident design, starting with the Hyundai Tucson with its distinctive front end, through the Hyundai i30 CW and its sloping roof to the sharp Hyundai i30 Fastback.

The latter sports the classiest bodywork in the family, but is stingy in the rear on space. Above all, there is a lack of air for the head, but also around the knees and shoulders.

The Hyundai station wagon does better here: There’s a decent amount of space in the back, even for adults. But the most legroom is found in the SUV, which also offers more luggage volume, with between 577 to 1,759 liters, and the cargo floor is flat with the second row folded down.

In the i30 Fastback a maximum of 1,306 liters fit, and the loading mouth is high with 79 centimeters high. In the family it is 61 centimeters, and it has a cubic capacity of 493 1,541 liters.

Engine and behavior

The i30 brothers yield 160 hp from a 1.5 liter, in the case of the SUV it is 180 hp from 1.6 liters. Despite more than 200 kilograms of additional SUV fat, the Tucson maintains good driving performance.

However, since it has the optional all-wheel drive, it needs 2.3 liters more than the CW and even 2.8 more than the Fastback per 100 kilometers.

The Tucson is also generous when it comes to price, at the €40,000 mark. As a consolation, however, it is worth mentioning that the basic manual and front-wheel drive 1.6 T-GDI barely exceeds 30,000 euros. However, this is still almost 3,000 euros more than the comparable i30 Fastback and the difference amounts to 5,000 in the case of the station wagon.

Factors to decide the purchase

Although the Tucson is a bit more modern than the Hyundai i30 CW, neither is as practical here as the station wagon.
