The cyberattack crisis continues to increase and more and more companies are suffering from them, including some of the large entities present in Spain. From what we discovered, it is indicated that Carrefour has been the latest victim to suffer the leak of its customers’ personal data. Is there anything to worry about?

The news has appeared in the last few hours in elDiario, where they comment on having access to one of the letters that Carrefour has sent to customers who have been affected. More precisely, the division that suffered the attack was Carrefour Servicios Financieros, which saw its computer systems compromised.

What information has been stolen?

For now Carrefour has not made an official statement regarding what happened, so we have to limit ourselves to the data that has been included in the letter sent to the affected users. It indicates that the cyberattack has stolen basic personal data, as well as contact data and others such as the DNI number. However, Carrefour ends the sentence saying “among other information”, which leaves open the possibility that there is more information that has been leaked and that, for now, they have not revealed.

Hacker launching a data theft attack

Taking into account that the attack was on Carrefour Servicios Financieros, what users want to know is to what level they have to worry. On the one hand, at least, the entity affirms that the access codes to Carrefour services have not been compromised, nor have the positions been compromised. On the other hand, if you have not received the letter you should not worry, since it seems that everyone affected has been informed.

The filtration problem

The letter was received by accepted users during the Christmas period, which we imagine did not help much to enjoy the holidays. Carrefour has not revealed how many people have been affected by the data leak and, for now, they have not specified whether the information about the products that users have contracted has also been stolen or not. Another question that would remain in the air would be to know if the numbers corresponding to the Carrefour Pass cards have been affected.

This would be something that would be interesting to clarify soon, since in Spain there are thousands of customers who have this card with which it is possible to pay on credit. The interest that the card provides for this type of payment is 20%, but in contrast, buying with it means being able to access some additional discounts. In addition to this, Carrefour Servicios Financieros is also an entity that stands out in Spain for its deferred payments and credits, having signed more than 2,000 million euros in loans in our country. Due to this, you can imagine that the number of clients who work with their financial products is not exactly small.

Man thinking about using his credit card

To reassure users, Carrefour states in the letter that, from the moment they discovered that they were suffering from an attack, they did not stop putting measures in place to solve the problem as soon as possible. Not only did they stop the attack, but they also incorporated new defenses that will prevent something like this from happening again. And, of course, from the first moment they say they began working to resolve the incident.

However, you have to be careful and keep in mind that stolen information can be used by scammers and criminals to launch phishing attacks and other types of threats that cannot be prevented with an antivirus. Therefore, from this moment on, users who have been affected should be very careful. Carrefour recommends that its customers be wary of SMS, emails or calls that request information or do not provide adequate identification.
