Google has accidentally leaked the internal preview of a new artificial intelligence tool. The media outlet The Information, which managed to keep an eye on the AI agent before it was hidden again, explains that it is designed to help Internet browsing.
The new AI that Google is preparing is called “Jarvis” internally. Last Tuesday, November 5, it was leaked by accident. For a time, it could be downloaded as an extension through the Google Chrome browser web store.
The description for “Jarvis” on the Chrome Web Store indicated that the extension was “a helpful companion that browses the web with you.” Although the prototype could be downloaded, those at The Information tried to test it and it did not work due to problems with access permissions. Later, they removed the extension from the browser store, so possibly they released it by mistake.
What we know about Google’s “Jarvis”
Although those who downloaded the extension could not use it, the description gave us clues as to what it could be. Some reports that had previously been leaked spoke of an artificial intelligence agent called “Jarvis” that was just going to serve to facilitate web browsing. As announced, the tool will be able to search for us and buy products or book flights in Chrome, to speed up routine tasks.
Rumors suggest that Google would publicly launch this extension in its browser in December, along with the latest version of Gemini, its large language model. A few days ago, it seemed that they had wanted to get ahead of themselves, but it was an error that they quickly resolved, but not before The Information was able to download it.
“Jarvis” is not the only AI agent
Many artificial intelligence experts say that AI agents could be really useful in our daily lives. For this reason, Google is not the only company committed to developing this technology.
Last month, Anthropic introduced a new feature for its Claude LLM that ticked everything you’d expect from an intelligent agent. The functionality could take control of the device and read and write JavaScript code. Furthermore, OpenAI is also working on the same and even ChatGPT might be able to send messages first and perform tasks for users in the future.
AI agents are software programs capable of interacting on their own, based on data they collect and using it to perform defined tasks autonomously to meet predetermined objectives. In the case of “Jarvis”, it seems that they will be in charge of searching Google Chrome for us to reach a very specific conclusion.
For example, the possibility of “Jarvis” buying a plane ticket on his own could be incentivized by our need to find the cheapest flight on the web. However, the developers will most likely ensure that the human always has the last word. This means that the AI tool will be able to select the offer so that you can buy it, but it will not do so unless you allow it.
According to several media outlets, Google will launch a first definitive version of “Jarvis” in December, at the same time as the next Gemini update. We do not know what its official name will be or if it will take longer to arrive in Spain due to European Union regulations. But surely more than one user will be able to take advantage of it. An AI agent in Google Chrome is very useful. Above all to make browsing the Internet easier.
