When it comes to committing crimes, criminals try to use all kinds of tricks for their scams and profit from their victims. Every day we see —and we alert you at ADSLZone— all kinds of modus operandi through emails, SMS and even scams via phone calls.

It is precisely this last type of scam that we are talking about today. Unlike other occasions, in which the danger comes from answering the call and should be avoided at all costs, on this occasion you will practically not have time to pick up the call, so the danger will lie in returning it.

Never return a call from +881

If you were wondering, a number that begins with +881 does not correspond to any country, but is reserved for the mobile satellite system, that is, for mobile phones with a satellite connection.

Bearing in mind that picking up a phone call from an international number if you weren’t expecting it can already be a risk, this is multiplied with +881. Why? Calls from these numbers ring for just a few seconds and we will find your missed call.

In the event that we return the call, we will be victims of a scam, since, according to National Police sources, the number that is dialed is assigned a special rate that allows the interlocutor to profit financially from the calls they receive.

They are making calls from outside and close immediately.
The prefix is +881, but it appears as “Ecuador”

The destination of these calls is usually uncertain, but on occasions they have been traced from countries such as Albania, Ecuador, Nigeria or Ghana. The interlocutors usually keep the victims who have called them back entertained for several minutes so that the call bill continues to grow as much as possible.

Not to be confused with Galicia

In our country, these calls can have an even greater effect, as they can cause confusion with calls made to us from Galicia. In Spain, landlines that begin with the prefix 881 are located entirely in the province of A Coruña.

If you have registered on your phone a missed call from a phone that begins with 881 (without the “+” symbol in front) or with +34881, it corresponds to a landline phone in A Coruña, and you can call without problem. On the other hand, if the missed call begins with +881 (with the “+” symbol in front) or 00881, it corresponds to an international prefix reserved for the mobile satellite system that we talked about before and it will end up costing you a few euros.

To help you avoid being deceived, you can use applications that are used not only to identify telephone numbers, but can also alert you if the caller is a number reported as spam or dangerous, as is the case here.

Some examples are PepeEscudo, Mr. Number, Hiya, CallBlocker or TrueCaller. These applications will not only allow you to have greater control over the numbers you have blocked, but they also give you some peace of mind by identifying the incoming call and displaying an alert on the screen in case it is a number to avoid like this, saving you from having to answer the call to find out who is on the other side or allowing you to access testimonials from people who have fallen into the trap.

If you don’t want to fill your phone with apps, use common sense and simply don’t return calls from such a strange source, or take the time to do a Google search that alerts you to the danger you’re getting yourself into. if you call back
