May continues on the positive path of registrations, with sales growth of 8.3% thanks to the 92,025 units registered in the last 31 days.

2023 seems to be a year of relief for the punished Spanish automobile market, which since 2020 has had negative months, sinking sales of new passenger cars in our country. However, May has been presented as the fifth consecutive month where car sales have increased, achieving a growth of 8.3% in registrations.

In total, the month of May has closed with 92,025 registered units, which presents an increase of 8.3% compared to the same month of 2022. This allows the accumulated figure for the year to now stand at 404,337 units, 26, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year, although it is still 28% lower than the sales registered in 2019, before the pandemic.

Despite this, the results are positive, favored by the improvement in production rates that are making it possible to respond with greater agility to orders from dealers, mainly in the rental and business channels, which are the ones that are driving sales the most. sales against a private channel even at a low rate of registrations.

Specifically, the private channel registered 36,495 registered units in May, 5.3% more than in the same month last year, but still 33% below what was obtained in May 2019.

Meanwhile, the rental channel has grown by 19%, with 21,708 units registered in May, and the business market has also managed to grow by 5.4% this past month, reaching the same records as in 2019 and obtaining a total of 33,826 units sold.

Among light commercial vehicles this positive trend continues. In May, 12,048 units were registered, 10% more than last year. The accumulated figure for 2023 also shows an improvement of 22.1%, reaching 56,842 units.

For their part, the registrations of industrial vehicles, buses, coaches and minibuses have also achieved a green May, with an increase in registrations of 27.4% and a total of 2,486 registered units. The accumulated figure for the first five months of the year is also positive, with an increase of 20.8%, which now places this market at 12,636 units.

The employers’ association of vehicle manufacturers are beginning to be positive regarding the balance of this 2023: “With five months closed, we hope that the end of the year could be around 950,000 units, 25,000 more than the most optimistic forecast we had in January,” says Félix García, director of communication and marketing at ANFAC.

However, they also call for prudence, especially when the uncertainty of citizens and companies about which car to buy is still latent, to which must be added the call for general elections, which usually paralyzes economic activity, the state of inflation and the rise in interest rates, which does not favor the financing of the purchase of new cars.
