When the DGT environmental labels came into force, many did not bother to get theirs, even when it was free. Now that there are going to be Low Emission Zones in all cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, the rush is coming. We tell you how and where to get the DGT Label in Spain.

First things first, know which is the DGT Label that corresponds to you.

Types of DGT Label in Spain

In Spain there are five categories of vehicles based on their environmental rating, but only four of them have a label, which can be one of the following:

  • Zero Label: battery electric vehicles (BEV), extended range electric vehicles (REEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) with more than 40 kilometers of autonomy and or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

  • Eco Label: plug-in hybrids with a range of less than 40 km, self-recharging hybrids (HEV), micro-hybrids (MHEV) and gas vehicles (CNG, LNG and LPG)

  • Label C: petrol cars and light vans registered from January 2006 and diesel from September 2015

  • Label B: gasoline passenger cars and light vans registered from January 1, 2001 and diesel from 2006

Finally, there are the vehicles with label A, which are those that do not directly have it. They are older and more polluting than B and are the ones with the most traffic restrictions.

How and where to get the DGT Label in Spain

The DGT points out that there are five main ways to get hold of it:

  • Post Offices
  • Network of workshops of the Spanish Confederation of workshops (CETRAA) and other networks of authorized workshops
  • Administrative Managers
  • Institute of Automotive Studies (IDEAUTO)
  • Ganvam, but in this case only for fleets

Now, we are going to analyze the procedure in each one of them.

Doing it through Correos is the easiest way. Simply access its website, enter the car’s registration number, your DNI, attach a photo of the circulation permit and another of your identification document. Pay 5 euros plus shipping costs and you will have it in less than 48 hours.

In CETRAA workshops (in addition to others that are also authorized) the process, documents to be delivered and amount to be paid are exactly the same.

The same goes for Administrative Managers, although locating them can be a bit more complicated. That is why the General Council of Administrative Managers of Spain has a service so that you can find the one that is closest to you.

IDEAUTO simply access its website, enter the vehicle’s license plate, then the car information will appear, then you have to fill in the data for shipping and make the payment.

The last option is Ganvam, but only for vehicles belonging to fleets. Given its focus, it offers reduced prices the greater the number of DGT labels purchased. It is not profitable in the case of few units (it is more expensive than in other methods), but for large fleets the cost is reduced and the process is simpler than acquiring them one by one.
