How much has the price of gasoline increased in Spain?

Those of us who move around in combustion cars have never been so ‘hurt’ before by visiting the gas station. We are not just talking about record highs day in and day out. The problem is in the evolution of fuel prices in the last year.

Taking as a reference the price of fuel on Monday, June 13, a liter of gasoline 95 cost an average of 2,115 euros and a liter of diesel A, 2,021 euros. In other words, on June 13, 2021, it cost us 95 1,362 euros per liter, which a year later represents a year-on-year rise of no less than 75 cents per liter, 55.4% more.

Last year’s year-on-year increase in fuel prices doubles that produced in a decade and a half.

In the case of diesel A, the price of diesel has varied from 1,229 euros a year ago to 2,021 euros two days ago, an increase of 79 cents per liter, which is equivalent to 64.4% more. Thus concludes a report by Facua-Consumers in Action, which has also analyzed the evolution of fuel prices in the last 15 years.

Did you know that the gas station with the most expensive price for gasoline 95 on the 13th was located in Olloki (Navarra)? Specifically, the liter was charged at 2,389 euros. In the case of diesel A, the highest price, applied at a gas station in Granada, was 2,259 euros.

Price of diesel and gasoline 15 years ago

Looking back at 2007 and at fuel prices, we are aware of how much mobility has become more expensive, especially in the last year.

GAS PRICE

In 2007, filling the tank with 95 gasoline cost us 1,074 euros per liter. In 2022 the cost amounts to 2,116 euros per liter, which represents a difference of 1,042 euros, almost double.

Facua’s analysis confirms that the rise from 1,048 euros in 2009 to 1,417 in 2013 was 37 cents.

DIESEL PRICE

Reviewing the data for the last 15 years, we see that the price of a liter of diesel has risen by 1.07 euros, from 0.951 in 2007 to 2.021 today. Taking the prices between 2009 and 2013 as a reference, the difference was only 40 cents.

We find the problem when we analyze the year-on-year rise of the last year. Facua warns that it has been 75 cents in the case of the price of gasoline and 79 cents in the price of diesel, practically double the maximum oscillation of 40 cents that has occurred in a decade and a half (especially between 2009 and 2013).

Here is the list with all the fuel prices of June 13 in the last 15 years obtained from the website of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge geoportagasolineras.es:

Why have the prices of different fuels skyrocketed in Spain?

There are four main reasons for this significant increase in fuel prices: the international political context, the increase in the price of a Brent barrel, the price of foreign currency and taxes. My colleague Jaume explains it in detail at this link.

The Government will extend the discounts

The Third Vice President and Minister for the Energy Transition, Teresa Ribera, has announced that the subsidy for fuels of 20 cents per liter that is currently being applied will be extended, in principle until June 30, but now we know that it will be extended until on September 30, but will the discounts still apply to everyone?

In a recent interview, the minister has dropped that they are studying the possibility that the subsidy only be applied to the groups that need it most, although she has said that this option will only be effective if they find an “agile and fast” formula to do so. There are many voices that have been raised denouncing that the reduction in the price per liter of fuel ends up favoring the highest incomes and that it is not fair to subsidize without differentiating between incomes. It is also not clear that this discount of 20 cents is effective given that many gas stations raised the price unfairly before the measure began to be applied on April 1.

And to finish, I leave you some links that will surely be very useful for you to save some fuel, especially now that the summer season begins and you are surely already planning a trip or route by car:

  • Gasoline cars that consume less
  • Diesel cars that consume less
