Since the end of February 2022, coinciding with the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, the price of fuel has skyrocketed. Since then, going to the cheapest service station has become a vital necessity for many families. Fortunately, there are tools to find the cheapest gas station in one click.

In the last 12 months we have witnessed an exponential increase in the price of gasoline and diesel, which reached its all-time high in June of last year: gasoline cost an average of 2,152 euros/liter, while diesel reached 2,106 euros/litre, something we never thought would happen.

This rise in fuel prices forced the government to apply a discount of 20 cents per liter at the end of March, a measure that was extended until December 31.

But, since January 1, 2023, users no longer benefit from this 20 cent discount, only some professionals, so the price of gasoline and diesel has returned to levels prior to the entry into force of the government discount.

Over the last year we have witnessed another anomaly: diesel more expensive than gasoline. Although, in recent days the situation has been reversed and diesel has become cheaper again. Currently and since the beginning of the new year, the price of fuel has stabilized above 1.60 euros.

gasoline or diesel

Typing in Google how to find cheap gas stations offers you different options like the ones we already told you about in this article. But now we are going to delve into one of them, specifically the one offered by the renowned OCU (Organization of Consumers and Users). If you click you can find the cheapest gasoline closest to you.

The link that we are telling you will have the possibility of selecting the area where you live through your zip code. You can choose what type of fuel you want (95, 98 gasoline, diesel or liquefied gases), the ratio of kilometers in which to move, as well as the tank capacity of your vehicle and the cost of total filling.

In some cases (depending on the gas station) the savings can be up to 7 cents per liter, which is a small relief for your economy if you have to refuel often.

What are the cheapest and most expensive chains?

Waylet Repsol

According to a study by the OCU itself, BonÀrea is the cheapest chain in diesel A and gasoline 95. It is a chain of supermarkets and service stations in Catalonia and neighboring areas of Aragon. It is followed by the chains of automatic gas stations Plenoil, GM Oil and Campsa Express, the low cost variant of Campsa, Petroprix equals the previous ones, but only in diesel.

In the case of diesel, the most expensive are Repsol, BP, Petronor, Petrocat and Valcarce. Their prices are at least 8% more expensive on average than the cheapest, which means an additional cost of up to 0.18 euros/litre. Petrocat and Valcarce are also the most expensive for 95 gasoline, with a difference of up to 12%, which is about 0.20 euros/liter.

Monday, the best day to refuel

In addition to finding the cheapest gas stations with a single click, there are other tricks to make filling up your car a little less painful.

Weekends are when people use the car the most and go to the gas stations to refuel, therefore, the distributors take the opportunity to raise prices. On the other hand, on Monday the opposite happens and prices drop. That day, we can save up to 1%, compared to other days of the week, more than half a euro per refueling.

Although, according to the OCU, the justification for this saving has nothing to do with the demand for the product, but with a bureaucratic aspect: “Monday is the day of the week on which the sale prices of fuels must be communicated to the European Union to carry out price controls”.

“The information that is transmitted is clearly distorted to make believe that Spain has a lower level of fuel prices than it really does, and that it is doing better than reality reflects,” he adds.

On the other hand, the time of day that is cheapest to refuel is midnight, according to the organization. Likewise, in the early hours of the morning is a good time to go to the gas station and fill the tank at a more advantageous price.

This is so because, normally, the distributors update fuel prices at midnight and they are not updated again until 3:00 p.m. Therefore, it is very likely that, from that hour, the price has risen.
