Since the point card was launched in July 2006, one of the concerns of drivers is losing or recovering the points on the card. The initial credit for all drivers will be 12 points (8 points for novice drivers or those who recover their permit after it has been withdrawn).
This balance of points can increase up to a maximum of 15 points if you are a good driver, but it can also be reduced until you run out of license. Everything will depend on whether or not you commit infractions that lead to withdrawal of points.
How to recover the points of the DGT?
You can recover the points of the card, whether you have lost all or only some. Although depending on the case, the procedure to follow will be different. First of all, clarify that card points cannot be recovered online, the courses to be taken are face-to-face. I’ll explain it to you below:
YOU HAVE LOST POINTS BUT STILL HAVE BALANCE:
• You can get points back if you don’t commit any violations (that deduct points) in two years. In that case, you would have a balance of 12 points again and it is the only way to recover points from the card for free, without paying. In any case, you will not be able to recover the 15 points of the card.
• Take a points recovery course: you can recover a maximum of 6 points (never exceeding your initial balance). This course can be taken once every two years (once a year in the case of professional drivers).
What does this points recovery course consist of?: It lasts 12 hours, of which 7 hours are devoted to matters related to the culture of road safety, one hour to reflect and debate in a group and 4 hours of specific training and individualized for each person according to the infractions for which they have lost points.
YOUR PERMIT HAS BEEN TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED
The situation may arise in which you have been sentenced by a court sentence for a crime to deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles for a period of less than or equal to two years. In this case, you will have to take a 24-hour road awareness and re-education course (permit or license recovery course). You will be able to drive again after completing the sentence period and after accrediting that you have successfully passed the course.
YOU HAVE LOST ALL YOUR CARD POINTS
You can also lose all the points either for committing many serious or very serious traffic offenses (they are processed through administrative channels) or for a judicial conviction in which you have been deprived of the right to drive for a period of more than two years (criminal ). In any case, after receiving the notification of the final loss of validity, you will have to hand in your card at any Traffic Headquarters or Office. From that moment you will no longer be able to drive.
• To recover the license in these cases, you must have completed the period of serving the sentence, proving that you have taken advantage of the 24-hour driving permit or license recovery course and pass a theoretical test on the knowledge learned at the Provincial Headquarters or at the Local Traffic Office. The new card you get will only have a balance of 8 points.
• Before taking the exam, you will have to wait for the period of validity imposed, which is six months (three months in the case of professional drivers). During that time you will not be able to drive. If you are a professional driver dedicated to the transport of goods, you will have to certify it.
• You have to obtain a psychophysical aptitude report: you have to obtain it from an Authorized Driver Recognition Center. You must present it in order to take the exam. Please note that this report expires after 90 days.
• Finally, request the theory test on the course taken. This exam is priced at 28.87 euros. You can request the course here.
• Once you have passed the exam, you must request the issuance of your new permit so that it can be sent to your home address.
• If you do not pass the exam: you can take it again up to a maximum of two times, but you will have to complete a 4-hour training cycle first at the Center where you took the Course.
