Discounts are for young people between 18 and 30 years old

There is a fundamental condition to obtain the 90% discount on bus and train tickets announced by the Government: having turned 18 but not older than 30. In addition, the trips must be through Spain and Europe on dates between the 15th of June and September 15.

The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) has published the conditions to access the discounts of the Young Summer campaign. The objective is to make medium and long-distance journeys on public transport more affordable in order to promote sustainable mobility. The discounts reach 90%, but the amount depends on the chosen means of transport.

Discounts of 90% on the price of the bus and the train

In accordance with the specifications approved by the Government for the summer 2023 travel discount campaign, there will be discounts for the following trips:

  • 90% discount on conventional medium distance services and on the metric gauge network (commuter trains)
  • 30% discount for single Avant tickets (high-speed medium-distance trains)
  • 90% discount on regular bus services of state competition
  • 50% discount for Interrail Global Flexi services, as long as they are for 10 days in 2 months and are marketed through Renfe

The fine print indicates that the discount is only applied to the price of the ticket, that is, not to other charges that may be associated, such as handling fees or baggage surcharge. In case of cancellation it will be the buyer who assumes the costs.

How to apply for the discount

The Mitma estimates that with this campaign around 12.5 million young people will be able to travel at a discount. The measure is aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 30, both inclusive, residing in Spain.

To request the discount, it is necessary to fill out an application through the Mitma website to obtain a code for personal use that gives access to the discounted price. This code can only be requested with a maximum of 24 hours before purchasing the ticket. “The process to request the code has been active since June 1, but discounted tickets can only be purchased once the companies finalize the necessary changes,” official sources clarify.

To confirm that the applicant meets the necessary requirements, different mechanisms can be used such as the digital certificate, the Cl@ve system or through the introduction of personal data (name and surname, and ID number together with the date of validity).

In response to the request, the system sends a code to the mobile phone indicated in the request.

Sanctions against fraudulent use

To prevent fraudulent use of the discounts, the specifications include a series of conditions and sanctions. There are two cases considered as misuse:

  1. The use of the Registration Code by a person other than the registered beneficiary
  2. Do not cancel a formalized trip and not made with a minimum notice of 24 hours. In the case of state bus lines, the concessionary company may reduce this 24-hour period on short journeys in which the majority of the journeys respond to compulsory mobility. Thus, changing the ticket on this type of journey will not be considered improper use.

The Mitma has prepared a system in which all misuses will be recorded; those travelers who accumulate six misuses will have their registration code withdrawn.
