If you use Steam to play, you no longer need to use other programs to record your games

Valve’s video game platform, Steam, is the most popular, oldest and most used in the world, a platform that is not perfect (none is) but that little by little, receives improvements to adapt to the increasingly greater demands of users who are forced to resort to third-party services to perform certain actions.

Both AMD and NVIDIA offer, through their graphics software, the possibility of creating clips of the video games we play and automatically saving them on the computer. This feature, which is also available through third-party applications, has just landed on Steam, currently in beta.

We are talking about the Game Recording function, a function that is now available to all users who are enrolled in the Steam beta program. Gameplay Recording integrates with Steam and allows users to record their gameplay in the background and edit the recordings to share through Steam.

Record and share your favorite clips with Steam

This new Steam function is responsible for recording the game that we run through its platform in the background; it is not necessary for the developer to make any changes to these for the function to be available.

Within the function options, we can specify how much hard drive space we want to dedicate to this function as well as the duration of the recordings. Although this function is designed to come into operation automatically as soon as the game starts, it can also be controlled manually to avoid filling the hard drive with videos that do not interest us.

Through the on-screen overlay feature, users can quickly review recordings and edit the content to crop and share directly from the application in .MP4 video format or simply store them on the hard drive for later sharing.

While it is true that it is not necessary for developers to adapt their games, Steam allows them to implement a function that adds marks to the recordings to make it easier to locate special events such as deaths, the start or end of a game, when the game is in the lobby and so on.

Steam states that this new feature is compatible with all computers, both those that have graphics integrated into the motherboard and those that use NVIDIA or AMD graphics (compatibility with Intel graphics is not mentioned).

If the computer does not have dedicated graphics, the run uses only the processor to do all the work, which will affect the performance of the computer. However, users with a dedicated graphics card will barely notice it working, as the graphics card will do all the work.

Activate this new function now

If you want to collaborate with the development of this new function available on a beta basis, all you have to do is join the beta program and download the latest available version, which is the one that includes this function.

To do this, we must access the application’s configuration options, Parameters, where we must click on Interface and then on Participation in the client beta, click on No beta selected and choose the Steam Beta Update option.

At that point, the app will download the latest available beta version of Steam to install and the app will restart. This new feature is not only available for the Steam client, but will also come to the Steam Deck.
