The Mazda CX-60 is the new large-format SUV from the Japanese brand. A model that directly attacks the Premium segment, ready to compete with Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo XC60. The Mazda seeks to be very competitive against its direct rivals with a price in Spain from 50,268 euros.
As of March 8, 2022, reservations can now be made in the official Mazda dealer network. The plug-in hybrid version will come first, then the diesel and finally the gasoline.

Elegant and sporty at the same time
Its elegant design seeks to capture the mechanical configuration of the car through its proportions. The long front bonnet, the space between the front wheel and the driver’s door, or even the rear overhang, everything has been designed to show that it is a rear-wheel drive architecture with longitudinal 6-cylinder in-line engines.
The models that compete against the CX-60 all use 4-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive, yes, only the highest-performance versions end up offering the possibility of a 6-cylinder engine. Here Mazda will play with an advantage in numerous markets in which the finesse and smoothness that a mechanic like this brings over a 4 in line is highly valued.
At the front we see a very high hood, with a very vertical front part, the optics integrate the headlights one on top of the other, instead of one next to the other. The large grille is another element that reflects the magnitude of the whole.
Such are the dimensions of the car with a length of 4.7 meters long, a width of 1.89 meters and a height of 1.67 meters that the 20” wheels look small. It’s a big big car.
At the back, it shows a more dynamic line, especially thanks to some light groups that are reminiscent of those of other Mazda SUVs such as the CX-3 and CX-5. Now, in the bumpers we find false false exhaust outlets. These current trends…
Premium quality
The qualitative leap of the CX-60 with respect to the models that we knew to date from Mazda is impressive. They have always been cars with good finishes, impeccable adjustments and a clearly sporty design. However, with the CX-60 Mazda makes a statement of intent when it comes to standing up directly to the models in the Premium segment of the category.
Leather upholstery with an exquisite touch, seats with a good level of support and a very pleasant padding. Very elaborate inserts on dashboard and door panels. Perfect fits between dashboard and doors once you close them. This is a car that rivals Audi, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in terms of perceived quality.
The space inside is very wide. With a wide central tunnel that loosely separates the passengers from the first row. I love that the control of the main screen is through a rotary knob that is perfectly at the driver’s fingertips.
The most surprising thing about the interior is that you can count on a system that automatically adapts the driving position. What you hear. When entering the first time the car asks your height, once you enter the information, a camera in the passenger compartment reads your eyes and looks for the optimal position at the wheel. To do this, it regulates the seat, the steering column and the mirrors all automatically.
But it does not end there, the interior camera also recognizes the driver’s face so that every time you get into the passenger compartment it adjusts all the parameters to your liking. It can memorize up to six faces, so each driver, when getting on board, has their seat, steering wheel, favorite music, air conditioning and other settings. Up to 250 parameters, eye to data.
The second row offers comfortable and wide access. The bench has a slightly inclined base and this helps to ensure that the free height of the ceiling is good, even with this giant panoramic glass roof of 1 square meter. Best of all, there is a lot of room for the feet under the front seats, nowadays it is hard to find with cars that once the front seat is in its lowest position they leave room for the feet of the passenger in the second row. Here they have achieved it and it is to be appreciated.
In a 5-seater configuration, the CX-60’s boot offers a cargo volume of 570 litres. Through handles that are integrated into the walls of the trunk itself, it offers the possibility of folding down the backrests of the second row. It is precisely with this last configuration, with 2 seats, when it reaches 1,726 liters.
Up to 327 hp
The unit that we could see live in Germany corresponded to the plug-in hybrid version with an all-wheel drive system, animated by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder in-line engine and a 136 hp electric motor powered by a 17.8-liter battery. kWh. Together they declare 327 CV and 500 Nm and according to Mazda the autonomy in 100% electric mode is 60 kilometers.
The gearbox that has been chosen for this new large format SUV is also new. An 8-speed automatic gearbox that forgoes the traditional torque converter, and instead of following the fashion of dual-clutch systems, it uses a single clutch.
The CX-60 has been developed on a new flexible large-format platform that allows Mazda to integrate plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid, as well as pure electric powertrains.
Later it will also be available with a 3.3-litre in-line six-cylinder turbocharged e-Skyactiv D diesel engine that can be configured in two different power levels.
In 2023, an e-Skyactiv X gasoline variant will hit the market that uses another 6-cylinder in-line engine. This time it is an atmospheric 3-liter that, like diesel, has a 48V micro-hybridization system. These two mechanics that are not plug-in can be either rear-wheel drive or 4×4, while the plug-in is only 4×4.
There is already a desire to test how it goes, especially to see how well the KPC or Kinematic Posture Control system works. According to Mazda, this system that does not add any weight to the set, it is only software that acts on the brakes, greatly improves dynamic behavior. What the KPC does is brake the inside rear wheel once the car is entering a corner. This reduces the tendency for the body to roll.
In short
Mazda makes a very strong bet to attack the Premium segment with a large format SUV that offers practically everything that the market is demanding right now. It even offers the possibility of configuring it with 6-cylinder in-line gasoline and diesel engines at a very competitive price.
